First let me say that this is not a "review" of how good or bad this game is,no no no this is a WARNING to anybody out there looking to buy this game for your PlayStation 2.It's important that you know that this game is NOT for an american PS2(ntsc-u/c)!!! This is Japan ONLY!!!(ntsc-J)I think it's pretty cappy that whoever is selling this did not state that in the description. It WILL NOT play in your American PS2 in fact it was NEVER released for the PS2 in America,Only Japan and Europe,however it DID release in North America on the XBOX so you might wanna check that out. having said that,This is one of the best games I've ever played in my life!!!

The Matrix: Path of Neo Review

Hey, what can i say? THIS game is much more like what the first game should've been.
This game is not linear as other reviewer(s) have suggested.
Yes, it follows a VERY familliar story-line for fans of the series. But, this program allows you to act out some of the BEST battles that NEO had to offer within the trilogy.
The way they meshed the movie bits with a new perspective was very nice. 600 DIFFERENT ATTACKS! I think that's incredible.
Some are so creative you'll find yourself attached to them more than others. But, there are so darn many you may never use all of them! New characters written in by the Wachowski's , come new environments, and the original voice actors. Better graphics than the first, better action. Easier to control characters.
The only complaint i have is that your friends AI is not all too smart. Once in a while they'll walk right in front of you while you're shooting and bite the big one. Or, stand too close when you detonate a bomb and (again) bite the big one.
Other than that, this was as great as i expected it to be.
I'm not even a die hard fan of the movie franchise.
I am, however, a fan of this game. A fun program whether you're a hardcore fan or not. But, it does help to know at least a little about the movie first.

Hidden Invasion Review

This game was a total surprise. After reading a lot of bad internet reviews, I had to force myself to rent it just to take a look and ended up buying it. It has it's bad parts, but as a quick bite of entertainment it more than delivers (also considering the price)
The game offers fantastic Sega Arcade style action paired with a cheesy (but fitting) story about aliens taking over the government - and getting their a** kicked by you (being either a chick or a guy). Graphics are well designed and stylish, even though this is not exactly a showcase specimen for PS2's brilliant capabilities. But enough nice effects (like fog etc.) to keep the most discerning geek entertained.
If you consider yourself a hardcore gamer that only deals with the hippest offerings - skip this.
If you are a casual gamer that looks for a nice, very entertaining, arcady and accessible experience - get this.

I fell in love with the original Dot Hack series of games (Infection, Mutation, Outbreak and Quarantine) and when I heard they were coming out with a new series, I was very happy!I went out and bought the game the day it came out, and I have to say, I'm greatly impressed.

First off, the graphics are good.They're not the best, as Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria and Final Fantasy 12 are slightly newer with better graphics, but they don't completely suck.

Sound is pretty good too, but it gets very repetetive after a few hours of gameplay.The combat sounds are exciting and "pop", but the background music gets on your nerves.Especially the background music when you're in the first town, "Mac Anu", gets stale so fast.

The controls are easy to pick up.The R1 button can now be assigned different skills so, unlike in the first games, you don't have to open several menus just to use an attack skill.Sadly enough, though, you cannot assign healing spells to the R1 button.The camera control is somewhat better than the last game, but I feel it still needs work.

The voice acting is decent at best.Most of the characters show little emotion, or over-react their emotion to the point of making it rediculous.Just wait till you meet Gaspard, and you'll know what I'm talking about... The main hero is also rediculously one sided, getting frustrated at each and every event trigger in the game, and often for stupid reasons.If its supposed to portray how gamers react in an MMORPG, its completely off the ball, at least as far as I've seen (been playing Guild Wars and World of Warcraft for about two years.)

There are TONS of stuff to do in this game too.You can become part of a number of guilds, which opens various options to you as a player, such as special shops that allow you to make creative items, access to a faster mode of transportation, etc.You can also do a number of fun and interesting, if not repetetive, quests.The designers definetely tried to capture the MMORPG feel, but I don't think they accurately got it.Close but no cigar.For example, the towns are bustling with people, but oftentimes you'll see one person, turn a corner, and they'll be there again when they were running the opposite direction a few minutes prior.The town recycles the inhabitants over and over, so no matter how far away you get from a "player", they'll be right there when you go to a different district in town.

The story is o.k. as far as I've been.A lot of it feels forced, like the hero has to do this because the programmers made it that way, not because the hero "wants" to.It started out that way, but quickly took a dive.

I'm not impressed with the grading system after you complete dungeons and fields.You get graded on how many things you kill, sneak up on, boxes or other destructable items you destroy, how many items you collect etc.There is almost no explanation of that system that I've encountered, and I feel its useless.All you can unlock is extra words to create new dungeons and fields and useless items. Literally, I've had 50 health drinks, which is like a potion in other RPGs, since the first couple hours of playtime.I never use them, cause I don't take that much damage ever.

Thats another thing.The game's battles are entirely too easy!No one battle provides any sort of challenge.If you go to an area three levels higher than you, it gets harder, but the difficulty is masked in more hitpoints and damage capability, not true improved AI or anything.

All in all, however, the game is a vast improvement over the previous games.There are tons of unlockable stuff, tons of places to go, and you'll be entertained for hours on end.I would definetely pick this game up if you get the chance!

Riviera: The Promised Land Review

Considering the fact that I own the Gameboy Advance version of this game and gave it a good review sometime back, I decided to rent this version to see how much better this version is compared to my Gameboy Advance version and give you my honest opinion on it. In some ways, I'm glad that I did rent it first. Yet, seeing as to how I'm a big fan of Riviera, I'll probably buy it at some point but not for obvious reasons concerning this PSP version. For the most part, the PSP Riviera is the exact same game I played on the Gameboy Advance. The noticable differences in the game are that they improved the graphics as well as the soundtrack, have more voiceacting in the game, added a few new cutscenes, included a dual language functional and reworked the controls all for the PSP port. You play Ein, a Grim Angel, who's been sent to Riviera to start 'the Retribution' that will destroy Riviera, and all the demons that have taken over there, once and for all. That's where the story begins. For those of you new to Riviera, Riviera is not your 'typical' traditional style RPG(like Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire or Golden Sun). Combat and Navigation in the game is alot different than your normal traditional RPG and that is what makes this game so unique & so much fun to play. I won't go into detail about it myself. I'd simply like to direct you to the Gameboy Advance reviews of this game as there are plenty of reviews there that will explain it to you. Either that or look back here later on as I'm sure someone will, eventually, explain it in these reviews. Depending on how you play the game, you'll get more than 40+ hours of gameplay and, as I stated in my GBA Riviera review, RPGs like this one only come along only once in awhile. It'd be a crime missing this one. Yet, I will have to say that if you already own the GBA Riviera- you're better off sticking with that game as there's not much new here to warrant a purchase. But, if you're new to the game, I would suggest you purchase the PSP version. I would have loved to have seen a new episode in the Riviera saga, myself, but Developer Sting thought it was necessary to do another port of the original for the PSP. Knowing our luck, next up will probably be a port of their next game after Riviera which was Yggdra Union. I just hope, at some point, they give us fans the game we want.

When I first started playing this game I had few, to no idea how the story mode played. I was expecting a mech game where a player customized a fighter selecting diffrent parts, ect. Not too deep. With a friendly Online mode. Wow, was I wrong.

The game itself is actually WAY bigger then I thought. Notice the 50+ hour story mode feature. They are not lying. The story mode takes the player into an 'online world' filled with servers, users, and channels (ala, Dot Hack series) All simulating an online experence -- offline. You first create a username, then enter a server and start from there. Before you start destroying those evil mech enemies, you must get your Licence. You need to take a test. When you pass, you are able to purchace a mech and from there you need to win battles to gain cyro (money/gold) to buy the individual parts. You compete amongs other users (all offline) in battles that take place around the world; Hong Kong, London, Tokyo, Cairo, and New York.

Besides story mode, Versus Mode allows players to use there fully-customized mecha's in battle. Or they are allowed to chose already made mechs. Quick Battle mode lets players fight without gaining cyros. Besides the offline 'online' story mode, SLAI also features an ACTUAL Online mode. Take your saved mech and battle users using your PS2 Online Broadband Adapter. Steel Lancer Arena International is an great title with many features that allow players numerous of fun hours of gaming. Not to mention, a GREAT soundtrack that includes popular hits from around the world!

Skull Monkeys Review

My favorite game since I was a smaller version of myself was Skullmonkeys.I missed it so much, I had to buy it.But, oh no, $$$ on Amazon?Well, I got it from a zshop anyway (very grateful) and I was very happy to see all the madness again.The music keeps our minds from laughing at the 2d side scroller game play, the claymation movies leave us begging for more, and the 70's come back to life in this once in lifetime (well, ok, there was the neverhood I guess, but I havn't played that yet) opportunity to get a little weird.

Dawn of Mana Review

It's hard to write a review for a Mana game and not talk about Secret of Mana. A game hailed as not only one of the greatest SNES RPGs out there, but also as one of the greatest RPGs of all time. Over the years, however, the Mana series has gotten progressively worse while other franchises from Square-Enix continue to be strong. Dawn of Mana is no exception as it is without a doubt one of the worst Mana games ever. It seems there will never be another Mana game to hold a candle up to the legacy set by Secret. It's really sad because Dawn of Mana, like the other Mana games to drop the ball, had a lot of potential to be good. The developers just didn't do things right.

Dawn of Mana centers on a guy named Keldric who is out to save someone named Ritzia from an evil King who has kidnapped Ritzia so that he can call forth the power of the Mana tree and plunge the world into Darkness. It's a pretty basic story. The good news is that the story is presented really well. The voice acting is top notch and the cutscenes are absolutely gorgeous to look at. Unfortunately that's about where the compliments to the game end. The gameplay, for as simple as it is, is rather frustrating.

Firstly, the game is fairly action/adventure oriented and has a dungeon crawl like feel to it. Keldric has what's called a "Vine Sword" that he can use to take on his enemies. He can use it to swing enemies into other enemies as well, but the real treat with this weapon is using his Panic attack which causes enemies to drop items. This is really the only way to get items from enemies. They don't just drop them normally. Keldric is also not alone. He's got an ally named Faye there to help him out and she's there to cast some supportive magic on him. Unfortunately unlike other Mana games, Dawn of Mana has no multi-player. It's all really simple stuff until you throw in the games other mechanics.

The targeting system in and of itself is incredibly flawed. When battling enemies you can lock on to them. However, for some odd reason, the game always locks on to an enemy in the distance... never the obvious threat that's taking you on. You can also lock on to other objects, but again, it's never the one you want or one that's close by. And if there are multiple enemies or objects the game has to cycle through them, and again it becomes tedious to wait for the game to get to the enemy or object you want. You're better off going at it on your own and not wasting any time with the flawed targeting system.

Another major flaw to the design of the game is the level up system. At the start it seems all fine and dandy to level up and get your abilities, but the moment you complete a chapter you lose it all! That means after you've gone through Chapter 1, leveled up Keldric and Faye to take on enemies, gotten them some pretty useful abilities and the like, you'll lose it all once you begin Chapter 2 and have to get them all over again. All your work will pretty much go to waste. The game tries to compensate by giving you Emblems which have abilities on them.

Getting Emblems is a task in and of itself. As you go through the chapters the game will rank you. An S ranking is the highest you can get. If you get a good ranking you'll be rewarded with an Emblem. There's an Emblem rewarded for each difficulty level as well. Completing Chapter 1 on Normal and getting the best rank will yield you a different Emblem than if you were to complete Chapter 1 on Hard mode with the best rank. Your rank is determined by things like how fast yo complete the chapter, how many enemies you killed etc. Yet even the Emblem system has its own flaws. You can only select to equip them before the chapter starts. You cannot change up Emblems in the middle of a chapter. Instead you'll have to complete it. A little more freedom would've been nice. Also, getting Emblems is just all out difficult. It's almost not even worth it to try.

As you go through the game, there's also a radar in the upper corner to help you out. It doesn't really provide that much help, though. There's a yellow box which represents your goal and then there are blue and red boxes for your enemies. Blue just simply means that the enemy has an item. Although, for some reason, you'll run into enemies on the map that are marked red on your radar that will drop items while some of the blue monsters give you nothing. Chances are yo won't really need the radar, but one has to wonder how Square-Enix managed to screw up something as simple as a radar system. Especially since they've done these sorts of things in plenty of other games flawlessly. The radar isn't scaled properly anyway. There are moments when it'll appear an enemy should be right next to you, and you discover they're actually a little ways away. Again, it's not too big, but it's such a simple concept that the fact that it wasn't done right is rather questionable.

The last major flaw in the gameplay department: The camera. It's a pain to mess around with. Especially when in battle and it swivels on you while you're taking on an enemy. It's controlled via the right analog stick, which makes things a little easier, but it's the fact that you'll spend a lot of time fighting with it to readjust because it positioned itself behind an object so you can't see yourself, or because the angle just isn't good. You'll spend quite some time fighting with the camera, and it's just annoying. The fact that there's no button to fix the camera right behind you is also sad.

To the game's credit, though, it looks and sounds really good. If anything, we can say that. Square-Enix is known for making some gorgeous games and despite Dawn of Mana's flawed gameplay it's true here. The look and feel of the game is absolutely fantastic. The voice acting is also pretty good. But the best part of Dawn of Mana is its soundtrack. The music in the game is nothing short of brilliant. On a technical level, Dawn of Mana is fantastic. But pretty graphics don't make a game fun, and that's also true of Dawn of Mana.

Dawn of Mana isn't a horrible game, it's just a very flawed one. The part of the game that matters most--gameplay--suffers from things that a game in this day and age shouldn't suffer from. It's especially disappointing considering what's flawed in this game are aspects that Square-Enix knows how to do well and have demonstrated they know how to do them well time and time again. It'll be hard for Mana fans to look past the flaws in this one. Another Mana game takes a dive.

-You start each new chapter at level 1, losing all the work you did in the last chapter

This game has everything you love about VJ previous games, excellent graphics, over the top voice acting and animation, lots of humor BUT... gameplay is so chaotic that its very hard to enjoy playing it, its like the designers tried to put all kind of stuff in a "smash bros." kind of game. I've been playing the game for 3 weeks now, but I am unable to enjoy it more than 10 minutes! action gets totally out of control very easily and you cannot even see where you are in the screen of the psp! the game becomes a complete mess and the gameplay is not fun anymore.

It's fun and easy to get started with, even though it's unlike other games.
You have to start with the EXT levels to get points for the real battles.These levels are good for getting acquainted with the controls without any pressure.It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to get the hang of moving, stretching, and locking.You also accumulate points by attacking the bonita zakos (the huge breasted ones).After the first few times, though, these levels become tedious tasks of getting points, so it's probably just as well that the game is pretty much just the 12 boss battles.
The main part of the game is the 12 boss battles.Each one has a unique scenario, and supposedly requires a different strategy.However, I beat half of them on the first try by simply running around attacking and dodging attacking without any clear strategy.I enjoyed the different scenarios, particularly Anne Droid V2.1 (shades of Le Petit Prince) though that one didn't require any strategy, and Cyan, which did require a little strategy.
There is some mild slowdown when the screen gets busy in the EXT levels and in the final battle with Spirit.It's slightly distracting, but not enough to detract from the game.
I really liked the sound.The voices and the music fit and enhance the game's atmosphere.

Xenosaga Review

Xenosaga ( the spiritual prequel to Xenogears, which was released by Squaresoft on the PSX ) is an RPG of epic preportions. Like Xenogears before it, Xenosaga comes ready to provide its gaming audience with an incredible storyline, great character development, and stellar graphics. The game is said to be a 50 hour endeavor, and is certain to keep you interested as you trek through its huge tale ( complete with the longest cutscenes ever to grace a game - many exceeding 45 minutes in length ). This game is definately the second coming of the RPG; not since FFX has the gaming community seen a game with such high production values. The game also includes english voices ( which up to this point seem quite good ).
As for the controvery concerning this games content, I will be glad to clarify. One scene ( that takes place fairly late in the game ) that involves the games villian and a main character has been altered to remove a suggested sexual relationship. Regardless of this one alteration ( which is being handeled by the game makers themselves ) the game retains its surprisingly over-the-top violence, language, and controversial religious themes. How namco was able to convince the ESRB to give this game a Teen rating is beyond me.

Digimon Digital Card Battle Review

Many sites have already classified this game as a Digimon version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game for Gameboy. In a few words, they are wrong. I have not played much of the Digimon TCG, but I can tell you this much--the Video Game is different. The three types (Virus, Vaccine, and Data) are thrown out for 5 new types (Fire, Ice, Darkness, Rare, and Nature). You can have more than one card (IE-two exact same Birdramons), and option cards play heavy in this game. Graphics are nice. The music is ok, but repetitive (having the Digimon theme music playing during the intro was nice). Controls are beyond easy to learn--however, this does not mean the game itself is easy to master. Overall, very enjoyable, and addictive. (A hint for beginners--start with Veemon; he has the most Armor forms; plus, his deck is the best to start with.)

Final Fantasy XII (Collector's Edition) Review

Final Fantasy XII is a magnificent game. I have been a fan of the series since the very beginning, but recently I have become disappointed with recent games until I played the latest installment.

The artwork is fantastic! Rich Desert landscapes, misty woodlands, ruin-filled caves, floating mines, prison dungeons, exotic palaces, and majestic cities create a vibrant and compelling world to explore. The Near-eastern influence to the architecture enhances the exotic and mystical senses while exploring this new world. There is certainly a good reason Square Enix can be proud of their record for high quality game art.

For reasons unknown to me, some critics dislike the new battle system, I say it is the shining glory of the game. The battle system parallels that of a MMORPG. There are no random enemy encounters or separate screens for battles. Battles take place in real time. The really amazing part of the battles is how Square Enix was able to include the strategic precision of a turn-based, tactical RPG, like Final Fantasy Tactics, in real-time action through the Gambit System. In the Gambit System, the player assigns a list of prioritized, conditional actions for party members to take. This allows the player to control 3 active party members in a real-time battle, assign specific roles, and enjoy leveling more than the story completion. This is the first RPG I have played where the gameplay and battle was so compelling it distracted me from pursuing the story on my first play through the game.

The lowest point of FFXII however, IS the story. It is by no means a total wash. The Characters are likable, interesting and engaging. The plot and presentation are all fine, but the story development and character interaction loses its flavor just past the half-way mark. The ending leaves you wanting more of an ending and feeling like the script was hastily and clumsily tied up instead of drawing to any meaningful conclusions. This is the same disappointment I've had with several of the Final Fantasy Installments since FFVIII. Instead of a glorious finale, it feels like mowing over a plateau. The effects and cinematic sequences are very high quality, but the character stories feel incomplete.

Overall, I highly recommend this game. Not everyone is a harsh story critic like I am. The art, world, and battle system are so compelling, that you will play over and over and still want more.

Urbz: Sims in the City Review

This was definately a fun game. Being set in the ghetto was a very good edition. Also, it is very interesting to work the jobs yourself. The only other sims game I've played was Sim City 4:Deuluxe Edition.Although there are many good aditions to the game there are also some drawbacks.

For one, you're characters "needs" are a real pain to keep up with. And the factor of "overheating" on the job was annoying too. But maybe I just picked the wrong job. I'm still working on my first character so I have not tried any other job. Maybe I'll try that.

There were two more good additons, the phone, and the reputation additons.

Overall, this was a good game for some, and not good for others. Depends on what kind of gamer you are. If you the RPG sort, then this is the game for you. However if you're the strategic game player, then this is definately not the game for you.

Like I said, it was good, but not good enough.

I have been a Pro Skater fan since the beginning.I've mastered every game the series put out (except THUG2 and American Wasteland because I was too dissapointed with them to try to beat them).Now I haven't played this game on any other system but the PSP.I'm 100% certain that the PS3 and Xbox360 versions are much better but I am still pretty impressed with this one.The graphics are looking better than ever, even on the PSP.I like the addition of the classic levels because I love the oldschool Tony games.The new "slo-mo" thing is a neat addition also but have yet to figure out how to use it properly because I keep bailing for some reason, (maybe a tutorial would help).The soundtrack is a little lacking.I'm a punk lover and there aren't many punk tunes on this (at least not good ones).Other than that, I haven't been able to put this game down.This one is definetly more challenging than the others but that's what I love about it.I have been playing this series for years and I would be dissapointed if everything was too easy.Aaanyways, it's a real great game on the go and extremely fun.Buy it.

Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s Bundle Review

When it comes to great music games, none has ever hit the nail on the head recently like Guitar Hero. While there are other games that've fizzled like Dance Dance Revolution, and other, this one has really shown its true colors well, by being simple and enjoyable. While die hard fans have loved the original version and its sequel, Guitar Hero II for the Playstation 2, there has been a spinoff game for whose who just don't want to await for the rhythms and feel of Guitar Hero III. But, the big question on this edition is that does this 80's encore, really prove to be worth the money, or is it just a guilty pleasure worth less for the wallet?

The Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The 80's Bundle for the Playstation 2, tries to bring the rhythm and style to the 80's for new gamers to the Guitar Hero series, but leaves a bit more to be guitar than it is worth the effort. The gameplay has delivered just like it did before on its prequels, but the tracklist is what seperates the axe, from the jams. Although there are great songs here on this edition like I Wanna Rock from Twisted Sister, and Synchronicity II from The Police, the tracklist instead options to choose more guilty pleasure songs like We've Got the Beat from the Go-Go's and I Ran (So Far Away) from A Flock Of Seagulls, all the way to one-hit wonders like Turning Japanese by the Vapors. The graphics fair well on the PS2, and the control, but it just doesn't do enough for die hard fans, or newcomers to the rock vibes. Instead, the spinoff leaves a bit more for gamers to play along with in this bundle pack. Although the guitar that comes with the game works well, the actual purchase of $80, doesn't feel like it is worth the purchase.

All in all, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks The 80's isn't a bad game, it just doesn't feel like it is a must but, especially when it is released as a bundle pack for less out of your money. If you're new to Guitar Hero, I recommend you buy a bundle pack from either Guitar Hero I or II for PS2 owners, or you could just be better off waiting for a bundle pack for Guitar Hero III when it comes out soon. The game is nice though, but I just wish that there could've been more out of the 80's here than what was bargained for.

All of the talk about this game being similar to Star Fox 64 is well-deserved, although it should not be in a detrimental way. This is one of the most solid shooting games for the PS1 and, even better, it can still be found for just a few dollars in most locations. On the other hand, this game is really only worth a few dollars.

One of the benefits of this game are the good graphics (well, at least for their time) and the ability to slightly modify your fighter's capabilities depending upon the wingman (or woman) you bring into battle with you. An extra bonus is that this game is moderately difficult so it won't necessarily be a simple breeze through the game.

The negatives, however, are a bit more important. The game can be completed in just a few hours and has almost no replay value whatsoever. It's nice that the game attempts to have a plot but it also forces you into very slow-paced 3D moments where you talk to your compatriots and walk around your own base, which breaks up the action too much and extends gameplay artificially.

So, if you want a quick rush of good gaming this could be right up your alley. It's cheap and available enough to bring some entertainment into your day. However, with its lack of extras and somewhat lackluster moments, you may very well be best off trying to sell the game once you're done with it. When all is said and done the game really is a one-shot deal at most.

Freaky Flyers Review

If you like cartoons and racing, Freaky Flyers is a winner. The cart game offers cool open environments and a fun cast of characters, from the bumbling, movie-star wannabe Johnny Turbine to the split personality Myrna Bookbottom, who turns into hellraiser Margaret Basher when she gets angry. I particularly like Tracy Torpedoes, a German experiment gone either terribly wrong -- or depending on your taste -- amazingly right.
As much as the characters are neat, the real meat of this game is the racing, which is flat out challenging. The goal of Freaky Flyers is simple: Win the race. The game kicked my butt more than once as I worked to figure out the best way to avoid running into trees or pasting myself into canyon walls. There are plenty of powerups and surprises throughout that make getting into the front of the flying pack easier, once you know where they are and how to use them. Some powerups can be won by flying through them, others require very controlled target shooting.
The first level, Bigfoot Mountain, pits flyers against a gnarly twisting canyon bristling with pine trees, villages, dams, waterfalls and tunnels. The program won't let you fly over obstacles, so it takes some real skill in tight corners. The graphics are solid here, as long as you don't get too far off the main course, where things get a little sketchy. I tried flying close to several bigfoot creatures and they weren't quite prepared for me. They kept jumping up and down in an odd, rigid way. Meanwhile, I was running 9th in the race and losing bigtime. At the end of the game, the announcer told me in a kindly but firm tone to put down my controller and 'step away from the screen.
Luckily, I didn't take his advice. Level 2 took me to Coyote Canyon, another curvy raceway where the speed picks up in a big way. Powerups ripped by and I found myself under attack from other flyers more often. Every plane has unlimited gatling guns, so squeezing off shots isn't associated with the usual problem of where to find more ammo. Some powerups give you rockets, which let you turn the competition into a satisfying flaming gumbo.
Level three, Bandito Attack, changes the scene completely. Here you have to protect a fort against heavily armed dudes in sombreros. If you spend too much time picking them off on the ground, their bases in the hills will shell your fort into smoking ruins. If you spend to much time attacking their bases, the pesky sombreros on the ground will... turn your fort into smoking ruins. This wasn't easy. The game doesn't give you any powerups at this level and you're almost totally on your own.
The fourth level, Thugsville Chicago, gets more complex and brings in sub characters while notching up the race speed even more. The urban landscape provides tricky canyons of apartment buildings with clothes lines, burning homes (which you have to put out) and more stationary attackers.Onesubgoal is to get the police chief back to headquarters. Luckily, powerups areeverywhere and smart flying rather than shooting seems to be the best strategy.
Level five takes you to an Arab scene that is mostly underground and not easy. I don't know how many more levels there are, since I'll admit I'm kinda stuck at level five for the moment. That's a good sign that the designers didn't build this game to be a throw away. It may look wacky, but the software is every bit as powerful as more traditional guns N violence or sports games.
The contoller is very responsive in Freaky Flyers. I spent a good deal of time learning to limit my stick movements or I'd go screaming off the race course and get hung up in a mountain pass. The music is good, if a bit repetitive, and there are movies locked among the levels that give you more information about the stories of each character.
Each game takes about 5 minutes to play, and if you win, they can be shorter.
Sound was a bit repetitive and I found myself turning down the volume.
All in all, Freaky Flyers is fun and challenging. You won't be sorry you bought or rented it.

I had very high hopes for Suikoden IV.Suikoden III was one of the first games I bought when I shifted to console games from the world of the PC.I liked it very much on the first play, when I didn't have much to judge it by, and in a recent replay, I found it still provided a rich experience, despite some problems that I now recognize as flaws.

Suikoden IV is a return to an earlier time than Suikoden III.To be honest, it is also a return to an older style of game.For all its graphics and animation, this latest effort plays like a lot like a PSOne game.One where they kept some of the flaws in Suikoden III and threw out some of the things, which gave that, game its special charm.The only really new feature in this game is that is mostly a sailing based RPG, with a ship-to-ship strategy conflict element as well.

Unfortunately, both sea and land experiences are slow-paced and battle-ridden.Until late in the game, your normal playing experience will be combat every 20 seconds.And until you are well into the game you not only walk or sail everywhere, but you go very slowly.There aren't a lot of opponent types in this game, so leveling up can become excruciatingly boring.Not hard, mind you, just tedious.If you've played other Suikoden games you will remember that you have to worry about not four, but 108 possible team members.

The story is straightforward.Two boys are raised and become knights together.One (the hero) excels at his tasks.The other, Snowe, has the benefit of rank and privilege, but falls short in skill and courage.The relationship becomes strained, there is a falling out, and a suspicious incident in battle results in you (of course you're the hero) and a few friend exiled from the knights and determined to prove your innocence.

The real culprit is the Kooluk Empire, which has decided to spread its power into the ocean kingdoms.Rune technology has reached the point of creating cannons capable of destroying whole cities, and the hero's only strength is the Rune of Punishment, which has great power, but inevitably destroys its wielder.The flow of the game is pure Suikoden - establish a headquarters, enlist supporters and fight, fight, and fight,

Other than the excessive and tedious fighting, the game's greatest weakness is poor character definition.Suikoden III, offered three different key players, all with strong personalities and stories.With little effort, you could make the game into something meaningful to you as a person.Suikoden IV is a fill in the dots story with an almost generic hero, one who is supposed to be you, but who never speaks aloud, never has a line longer than 5 words, and manages to develop no close ties with other characters.There are third person shooters with more compelling characters.

The game starts out shakily, gradually builds momentum, but never reaches the heights of its predecessors.For all that it covers an entire ocean, it really isn't a large game.Subquests and mini-games are lightweight - my favorite was the fishing game, which is an interesting way to spend some non-productive time.The game plays out shorter than Suikoden III and competitors like the Final Fantasy series.To be honest, I'm not sure if that is a bad thing or a good thing.

This is an acceptable game, but not one that will leave much of an afterglow.Since RPG's of any magnitude are rare, many of us will play it eventually.And as long as you don't expect something that sets the bar higher you will be passably entertained.However, I recommend you wait until the price comes down a bit.

Tomb Raider: Chronicles Review

Longtime gamers remember Tomb Raider for a few things: blocky levels, millions of switches, and that feeling of being really, really lost.In their latest and last playstation resurrection of the series, Eidos addresses many of the gamers' complaints.While far from perfect, Tomb Raider Chronicles offers up a varied 20+ hours of mostly switch-free game play.
Chronicles shines in many areas.The first thing that most people will notice is that Chronicles looks and sounds extremely good.After three or four revisions to the game engine one would expect a nicely immersive environment.And while the ambiance in Chronicles would benefit greatly from more music, the segways that are present really heighten the mood.
The good graphical engine used in Chronicles is complimented by good characterizations and a nice variety in levels.Every two or three hours, when you have completed three more levels, you are taken to another time in Lara's life, another set of missions, another set of objectives, and different dangers.This variety is a welcome change of pace for a Tomb Raider game, hardly ever slipping into that feeling of "been there, done that" which the series is known for.One scene Lara is avoiding a crane arm on a nuclear submarine, the next she is a little girl swinging over gaping chasms on a deserted island.And while Chronicles lacks an overarching plot, the variety of game play situations this type of narrative allows as well as good short storytelling and characterizations will more than keep any jaded gamer's attention span.
Unfortunately despite all the polishing Eidos has put into Chronicles, it's luster is greatly tarnished by a few extremely frustrating problems.For one, the camera seems to love Lara's high-rex, mit-mapped face.This can be troublesome when you are trying to see the jump in front of you.Anytime she faces away from a wall, or walks into a tight corridor, expect to keep tapping the camera button to see anything.After so many years, they should have it right.Furthermore, the player never feels like he or she actually is Lara.Thanks to some overly precise controls, she can turn slowly, jump only at designated steps, etc.This worked perfectly in the old Tomb Raiders, which were all about careful jumping.But Chronicles isn't, and her tremendous turning radius and her extremely slow sidestepping make the experience feel like driving a school bus.
But the most frustrating part of the game is how difficult it is to interact with objects.I can't tell you how many hours I've lost because the manhole I had to crawl down or the handle I had to yank off didn't respond to repeated button presses.I figured it was just background and moved on.Hours of aimless wandering later, the strategy guide would tell me to go back and do the exact thing that I had already tried to do.This one flaw takes a huge bite out of any overall enjoyment of the game that one might derive.Knowing full well that I had to steal a coin from an underwater demon, and having plenty of time to swim to it, it still took nearly ten tries to actually be able to pick it up.If I didn't know that was the objective, I would have dismissed it as background and moved on.
Despite its flaws, Tomb Raider Chronicles manages to be an overall fun, if frustrating, experience.Hopefully the next generation of systems will give Eidos the power to do something truly unique with Lara, and solve all of the control issues.In the interim, Chronicles is the best Tomb Raider has to offer, and by now you should know what that means.

Stolen Review

When I first heard of Stolen, I had thoughts of something similar to Splinter Cell with a new character, new gadgets, and a new purpose. However the execution of this game is poor in the extreme. The developers have obviously geared this toward the console market and the PC version isn't very stable. The framerate is terrible, there are graphics glitches throughout, and the levels are nearly impossible to complete for the average gamer. Saved games don't even restart you were you saved, but back at the last "checkpoint", another carryover from the world of consoles.

While the main character's acrobatics are impressive, some of the "mini games" within such as hacking and lock-picking leave quite a bit to be desired. Hacking consists of repetitive patterns in a 3x3 grid and the game's poor response time makes it utterly frustrating. Lock picking is done with a series of shaped tumblers, and a huge amount of key tapping. If locks were anything like this in the real world, crime would be non-existant.

I think the consensus for this game will be pretty much either you love it or you hate it. Console gamers will probably be fine with it on an X-Box or PS2, but the PC version is a poor adaptation of a game that had the potential to be truly great.

Alien Syndrome Review

In a way, this is a typical dungeon crawl - start a level, kill everything, pick up loot. The difference is that you are on an alien-filled spaceship and your only companion is an indestructible floating robot that can shoot the creatures and (depending on what attachments you put on it) shoot them better, heal you or recharge your shield batteries. It can also destroy loot you don't want and manufacture stuff you do. (To replace the fact you can't go to the store to sell off stuff and buy more.)

There are 5 classes to choose from - 3 ranged (explosives, lasers, or fire) and 2 melee. All classes can wear basic armor and use basic melee skills. As you level up, you can choose to broaden your armor, melee, or ranged skills; self-heal or self-charge your batteries; increase your carrying capacity; or build your resistance to the 4 types of damage (fire, electricity, infection, or radiation). You receive 1 skill point per level, but as you get more points in a skill, the cost to raise that skill becomes higher, meaning you may need to save your skill points from level to level. You also receive 2 points per level to put into strength (increases melee damage and carrying capacity), dexterity (increases movement rate), accuracy (increases chance of critical hits and critical multiplier), and endurance (raises hit points as well as resistance to damage).

While most of the missions are hack-and-slash (a few timed), the layout of the floors vary, as do the monsters you meet. Add in a nice background story and this game will keep you playing well past your bedtime.

Edit: I admit, I had not finished the game when I wrote the above review. The early part of the game is great, but once you get towards the end, it becomes very annoying. Ammo becomes a major issue, but there is no way to conserve ammo. (You can only produce so much before production goes into a "cooldown.") If you die, the game restarts at the last save point, meaning you have to fight the same monsters over and over in the hopes of beating them. (There is no option to go back to the checkpoint - minus ammo and healing spent - but with all killed monsters dead.)

I tried to get through the game, honest. But in the end, it was too frustrating.

The Original Disgaea on the PS2 was a sleeper hit.Creeping into the gaming scene.Those who played it were blown away by it.Eventually word of mouth helped the game become incredibly popular.However, the original Cult Classic on the PS2 is hard to find.And when you do find it, it often comes at unreasonable prices.Luckily, if you're a PSP owner, you can play the original game in a whole new light.You are essentially getting the same game, only with several extras.

For those who never played the original, Disgaea centers on Laharl.The prince of darkness who has been asleep for some time.As Laharl and with a gaggle of allies, your job is to conquer the Netherworld.The adventure is full of a lot of fun.Some hilarious antics as well as a really likeable cast of characters.The release on the PSP is even better than the original, and it's easier to find.

Disgaea takes the simple formula of a strategy RPG and mixes in its own little quirks.Battling in Disgaea is quite simple.You send your units into battle and you move them into attack position and then you execute your strategy accordingly.Unlike many tactical RPGs, battles in Disgaea can go fast.The maps are also incredibly large.In battle characters can also use abilities.The more times you use an ability, the more abilities you gain.Another great part about battle is that if your characters are standing next to one another and attack the same enemy, they'll perform a duel attack.As battles progress you'll also fill up a battle gauge in the corner of the screen.The more you fill up the gauge the more bonuses you get at the end of the battle.

There are a couple of things about Disgaea's system that separate it from other strategy RPGs.Some of them bizarre, others not so much.First there's the Geo Panel system.On the maps you'll certain tiles that are a certain color.These are Geo Panels.There are also Geo Symbols which have certain effects.Placing Geo Symbols on a specific color will make that Geo Panel color correspond with the effect of the Geo Symbol.Therefore, if you place a Geo Symbol that increases a characters attack on a yellow Geo Panel, all yellow Geo Panels will have an attack up.However, you can also destroy Geo Symbols.This causes a chain reaction that either turns all Geo Panels into the same color as the one which theGeo Symbol you destroyed was placed on or causes the Geo Panel to be destroyed completely.Either way, it racks up bonuses for your battle gauge.

Disgaea has other things that make it stand out above the rest of the crowd.Particularly in its smaller elements.Using items, for example, may cause them to become something else.For exaample, after you use Mint Gum it becomes ABC Gum and can actually be used again.A Drink will become an Unopened drink.Just the same, there's almost no limit to character raising.As the game progresses you'll discover that your level can increase into the hundreds and keep going until you're literally in the thousands.

Even better for Disgaea is the senate of the Netherworld.Battling will net you Mana Points which you can use in the Senate to recruit characters (the more Mana you spend the better the character) and assign him a job.Just the same, however, the senate has power over certain aspects of the game such as what items are available in the shops and whatnot.You can appeal to the senate and they'll vote on certain issues.You won't always win, but you can persuade by force, meaning, battle members of the senate who do not side with you.It's kooky and weird, but it works.There are also exams the senate gives you which are battles Laharl must fight alone.

Lastly, there's the item world.Throughout the game you can go into certain items and venture ten floors in and fight a boss.Doing this power ups items.The item world is no joke, however, as it's incredibly hard to conquer.Disgaea itself is not the easiest game around.There are many moments of the game dedicated to simply raising characters.

In terms of what's new to the PSP version, there are plenty of new missions to take on as well a couple of new secrets.This is much more than just one or two missions.There are plenty of hidden missions exclusive to the PSP version.Also, there is now a completely new game mode players can undergo.Lastly, there's multiplayer where you can play against a friend.In other words, there's enough new content here to justify the game to be a buy even for those who played the original to death.

In terms of production values, Disgaea looks exactly as you expect a Strategy RPG to look.It's pretty cute looking with sprites, but it's very colorful and runs smoothly without any problems.It's perhaps one of the fastest loading PSP games out there.The dialog presented throughout the game is also funny.The music is pretty catchy as well.If there was anything wrong with Disgaea, it would be that the voice acting isn't up to par with the rest of the fantastic game.The characters don't sound bad, but the voice acting doesn't have much feeling or emotion to it.Many scenes through the game that were funny would've otherwise been all out hilarious had the voice work been better.

Despite the voice work, that's a small price to pay.The game is still better than the original PS2 version and has a ton of gameplay behind it.This is an RPG that will last you hundreds of hours.Disgaea is quite possibly the best Strategy RPG you can find on the PS2.

Evolution Skateboarding Review

Evolution Skateboarding does not feel bad about copying the Tony Hawk series, although since Tony Hawk's Pro Skater did redefine the extreme sports genre of videogaming, no game has felt very original since.Still, level objectives are similar: collect 'x' amount of these, destroy 'x' amount of those, etc, and the trick system is set up the same way.So, if you're going to imitate something, imitate the best.
Unfortunately, Evolution's trick system fails miserably.It doesn't feel nearly as natural as Tomy Hawk's, probably because of the poor response time, and the clunky execution of tricks. And despite the fact that you can manual to link tricks, you'll be fighting with the controls too often to link any large combos.
There are a few unique features though, like three or four boss fights, interesting for a skateboarding game and not horribly executed either.
However, the soundtrack is not bad at all, (despite the fact that an announcer yells out every trick you do - that can be turned off in the options menu, though, I believe).It's what you would expect from a skateboarding soundtrack, with many generic songs I wouldn't care to hear again, but with a few highlights, namely "Role Model", and a punk-rock cover of the "Metal Gear Main Theme", (Evolution was published by Konami, who developed and publsihed the Metal Gear series.)That song alone made this game worth it for me.
But the Metal Gear references do not end there.One level has you skating on the Struts from Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, including Strut E (the heliport), and the objectives on this level are Metal Gear related.Collect 'x' number of dogtags, destroy 'x' number of floating sentries, plant 'x' number of C4 explosives and blow up the level.Very cool.Little details on this level are appreciated too, like the sound effect made when you are spotted by a sentry (the sound effect made when you are spotted in the Metal Gear series), and a few stray seagulls sitting on the rails of the walkways.Plus, there are a couple unlockable characters that will be familiar for Metal Gear vets, (neiher a surprise, but still welcome.)
I got this game for under ten dollars, and despite the bad controls, as an enormous Metal Gear fan, the Metal Gear references alone made this purchase worthwhile for me.If you aren't crazy about Metal Gear, then perhaps you ought to steer clear of this game.

This game is THE BEST game for Playstation there is! I love it! There is four different things that you can do in the game. There is Party mode, Practice Mode, Point Blank Castle, and Theme Park mode. Practice mode is where you can play your chooice of any of the gun challenges there are. The challenges are seperated into categories such as defense, animal targets, brain teasers, and many more. This is a good way to compete with your friends if you have only one gun, because you can play for high scores. Point blank castle is a mode with three choices, versus, endurance, and arcade mode.In endurance mode, you must clear as many stages as you can with only 3 lives. In Arcade Mode, there are four different difficulty levels, practice, beginner, advanced, and the insane mode.In this mode you play sets of four games, usually with at least one insane thrown in. The last is versus mode, where, if you have two guns, you can compete just as if you were playing the arcade mode. Next, in the Party Mode, there are again three party modes that you can choose from, tournament, team battle, and turf war. In tournament, you and up to four friends can play against each other in a tournament type battle. You play random challenges and whoever scores bet goes on to compete with the other winner, and so on. In team battle, you split up into red and blue team to do the same as tournament mode, without the tournament. Turf war is where you and your friends take turns stealing each other's territory. Moving on, the theme park mode is where you a boy with a GunCon who is visiting a theme park and finds out that the princess has been kidnapped. You are given tickets to the four rides at the park, which you must beat to get clues on what the princess looks like. The GunCon is awesome, the came rocks, and if you are a parent there is no violence and if you are a kid you will still like it. I rate this as a 5 star, although i wish it was possible to rate it higher.

Alundra Review

Rpg's throughout the ages of cmputer and video gaming have come and gone.Many have silently slipped through almost unoticed however this is one of those that manages to remain in the memories of the people involved in the world of gaming oncomputers of all kinds.
When you say the word RPG games such as Zelda, Final fantasy and Breath of fire fly through the air.However this is one game that easily stands up to the challenge that these rpg classics set.
The game takes place in around a village named Inoa, where you play an elf-like character who shares the same name as the game's title.Taking the game mechanics you would find in an RPG like the Zelda series and coupling it with a plot as dramatic as a Final Fantasy Psygnosis and dream matrix made an all time classic here.The story is that Alundra was on board a ship named "the Clark" and it sunk during a storm, washing up on Inoa beach he is nursed back to health and is drawn into a saga that has been plaguing the village inhabitants for some time.
Within this village numerous people are falling ill and dying as a result of dreams being turned into nightmares by a demon named Melzas.The player finds themselves summoned by a guardian named "Lars" (no connection to the Metallica drummer!) to stop this demon.Sounds cliched?In a way I suppose you are correct however the dreams idea is turned into a beauty of its own when you find that Alundra has the power to enter dreams and change their outcome.Thus you find yourself treated to numerous psychadelic images before winding in a usually dark rpg type dungeon where the dreams prisoner must be saved.
Of course this would be of no use to the gamer if there was no gameplay and naturally for an RPG there is tons buried beneath the surface.At first you feel that is a basic and simple rpg, yet later on it is that fact that makes this game such a well crafted piece of genius.The difficulty in this game comes commonly from the difficulty of the puzzles.Expect to have to decipher lock codes, organise a makeshift stairway from nothing amongst the obligatory demon slaying.
The game also boasts some fabulous variation in locale, whether it is the aforementioned dark dungeons, volcanoes and of course large castles expect to find lots to do.What makes this game even better is that it is between the plains of linear and non-linear.While like all other rpgs you are guided by information passed on by the usually passive characters in the village, you find that there are tons of secret locations to uncover within the mammoth quest that is available.If you like the idea of unlocking portals, uncovering life extending gems or new gear expect plenty of variety within the quest ahead.
Of course the game is not perfect.The main flaw with this game is that commonly you find puzzles being basic ones where you have to jump onto switches or simply time the throwing of a barrel and jump into a room.This may sound unchallenging yet it does prove difficult quite often when you find the time limits being incredibly tight.This is plus point in that you have to work at it, yet it is a negative point as you can sometimes fall from these jumps and wind up right at the very start of the puzzle or worse the dungeon.
This is one game that only the patient should try, if you have a low flashpoint then you may wish to give this a miss unless you can stop the urge to snap the disc!Persevere though and you find in this game a true classic that was slated for being a mere clone, however this is a foolish analogy to follow and is a joy to play from start to finish.Highly recommended.

Chulip Review

Chulip is a very interesting game. It's a completely different concept than anything else I've EVER played before, but in a good way. You play as a boy trying to win the girl of his dreams. Earning the trust of the locals means kissing them, and that's a lot of the game.

Positives of the game include that the overall feel of the game is a nice one, and the graphics, though not utterly amazing and realistic, fit the game to a T. The characters are all a little on the weird side, but that's one of the reasons that the game is funny. Earning some of the kisses require you to do odd things, like play on the (very dangerous, as the sign says) playground equipment in the park, riding to all of the train stations, and running out of the bath-house without your clothes on.

A definite con, if you ask me, is that when you're out past curfew (in the town only) and get caught, you are shot and it's game over. However, some of the kisses require you to go out at night, so it adds a little more challenge to the game. Also, because the main character is so poor, it's a little hard to maintain and earn money in the game. Your main source of income is digging in trashcans, where you can find many things from sweet potatoes to poo (which has value in Chulip, oddly enough).

All in all, it's a great game, and I would easily recommend it. Though it's not too bad, you might want to pay attention to the fact that it's "T" for "Teen"

Timesplitters is one of two great first person shooter games available for the PS2 (the other one being Unreal Tournament).This game was made by a group of people who were part of the developement team that made the classic Golden Eye and Perfect Dark games for Nintendo 64.So if you loved that style of play, you'll enjoy Timesplitters.But, WARNING: the pace of Timesplitters is BLISTERING!Some prefer the slower speed of the old Bond Golden Eye game, and some liked the quicker pace of Perfect Dark, but Timesplitters is MUCH faster than both.I found that some of my friends got a little dizzy playing it because they prefer the slower frame rate of Goldeneye (which is too slow for most, including me).Also, the one player mode is cool, but it's not the high point of the game.It was clear that Timesplitters was meant to be a great multi-player game.So if you're just looking for a one player shooting game that plays a bit slower, you might think twice about this one.In addition, the controls might take a bit awkward at first if you're used to playing with an N64 controller, but since you can assign button functions any way you want, it won't take long before it feels second nature.As for the best feauture of this game: it allows you to create your own levels!So, if you like blistering paced Goldeneye/Perfect Dark style action for more than one player, Timesplitters is a great choice for your PS2.I'm happy with my purchase, althtough it's not quite up there with SSX and Madden (which are absolutely stunning games).

The thing about Romance of The Three Kingdoms games is that they can seem complex, confusing, and intimidatingly alien to a newcomer.In fact, it's bizarre seeing such an odd bird on a console rather than a PC.However with the popularity of the spinoff Dynasty Warrior action games many of the characters and much of the Romance story is a familiar thing these days.There are certainly much more complicated strategy games on the PC for that matter and few of them have half as functional an interface for managing all the information about the game's world.

Romance is a strategy game for roleplayers.It allows you to create a character, or step into the shoes of any one of hundreds of historical and fictional officers, or his entire family and try to unify China under one ruler.How you go about that or whether you even decide to pursue that end is up to you.Other possible goals for a given run-through of a campaign might be collecting items like treasures, tomes or weapons, winning debates, battles or duels.Certain conditions unlock special events, locked gallery content, or new portrait art for custom characters.

The sheer variety of things to do in RoTK assures that it never feels the same twice.In my first game I played as Zhou Yu, a Lancelot sort, and ended up spending a goodly amount of free time after the Yellow Turbans were defeated just accomplishing private missions and exploring the map.My Liege was allied with most of the other powers and so peace remained stable until He Jin, the Emperor's protector, unified China.

The next game was with a custom character as the son of a minor warlord Kong Rong.Kong, the younger, spent much more time helping his father build up their small city and delved into diplomatic missions as well.All for naught as Yuan Shao overran the city.But that didn't mean game over.Instead Kong's son was released from captivity with many fellow officers.He formed a rogue army on the spot, as he was close with these worthies which included Taishi Ci and his own father, and marched on a distant unclaimed territory.After conquering it, he swore allegence to Cao Cao, a rival of Yuan Shao, and has been working extremely hard to build the city up.

To make ends meet he's had to take on common missions and put his own funds into the city's accounts but it is slowly paying off.His networking with wandering officers has built his ranks up.And the occasional bandit raid keeps his armies in practice until revenge can be exacted on Yuan Shao.There's also a young maid who recently gave him a zypher as a gift.Perhaps she's marraigeable and a new Kong Dynasty will come into being?Must save gold and get a fine present for her.She seems literate, constantly quoting from historical works, maybe a rare treatise?

Anyhow - this is how things go.Over time you can become the magistrate of a city, the overseer of a province or a ruler in your own right.You can form alliances with other forces and friendships, even sworn blood oaths, with other heroes.There's political intrigue, espionage and a decent tactical game which rewards preparation of both your military, economy and character's evolving abilities.New features include a campaign mode which seperates out a section of the strategic map and feels much more like the regional campaigns described in the novel.Also a fine debating mini-game allows non-martial heroes to have some fun for a change.

Torneko: The Last Hope Review

This game give a new hope to the RPG industry. While it's graphics are only mediocre, and it's storyline not too strong, it does have some strong points. Starring Torneko (a.k.a. Taloon) of Dragon Quest/Warrior IV it is a lot different than other DQ/DW games. You must go around through "magical dungeons" to collect money, item, and fight foes. And depending on the different things you did during the game will determine your "game ranking." It also serves partly as a sequel to the japanese games Torneko no Daibouken* for Super Famicom, and Toruneko No Daiboken 2: Fushigi No Dungeon** for PlayStation. I recommened this game to anyone who enjoyed playing the Dragon Warrior and/or Dragon Quest games.

Yes, this game is essentially a button smasher, but it's a very good one. The music is fabulous, the graphics are beautiful, and it's got great control. It still has some elements of Japanese in it, which I personally like. Overall, it's a very fun game, and I would reccomend it to anybody.

With so many great looking RPG titles coming to my favorite handheld (the PSP) these past few months I have certainly had my hands full trying to play and complete them all (Hope I don't get fired from my day job).Catching my attention this time is a "Level 5" PSP exclusive title by the name of "Jeanne D'Arc."This game is everything a Strategy RPG (SRPG) should be and more.Outstanding graphics, an intriguing story and an unbelievably easy pick up and play control scheme.So let get in to the particulars of this wonderful title...

Story: 8.0
The story, which is based very loosely on the story of Joan of Arc, because it is so loosely based on the real story, it is very entertaining.Jeanne D'Arcs' story blends history and fantasy beautifully, it starts with a Young King Henry getting possessed by some demonic power.His father who possesses one of the five armlets that were created to defeat these demons centuries ago, tries to save him but is too late as the demon consumes King Henry.Then enter Jeanne a girl who witnesses her village being attacked by demons, comes across one of these armlets and also believes she hears a call from God instructing her to kill the demons that rampage her village.This ancient armlet is said to be able to transform it's wearer into a great armored warrior.The story progresses mainly with three characters, Jeanne and her two friends Lianne and Roger.Many other characters throughout their journey are introduced and play apart in the main plot, but the majority of the time they are expendable at best.It is the three main characters and their interesting personalities; however that keep the story very interesting.

Graphics: 8.5
Jeanne D' Arcs' graphics are in a word, amazing.The 2D cel-shaded graphics used to bring the colorful and vibrant characters to life are absolutely gorgeous.The developers really impress by creating a product that can really show what the PSP is capable of.To start the adventure and throughout players are treated to some very beautiful anime cut-scenes, which are worthy of praise by any anime fanboy alive.This coupled with gorgeous backgrounds, magic spells, and Jeanne's' armlet transformations are enough to satisfy anyone craving some PSP eye candy. You honestly have to see this game in action to truly appreciate it; online screenshots do not do it any justice.

Sound:7.5
Every thing as far as background music and battle sounds like arrows whipping and other attack sounds were great. If I was a little disappointed about anything though, it would have to be the voice acting or the lack there of.It would have been nice to here them shout out some of their battle cries as opposed to having to read them in a little bubble. This is a VERY minor complaint though; it just would have been nice to hear seeing as how the voice acting in the anime cut-scenes were so great.It is also a little unfortunate that the anime cut-scenes don't include subtitles, because you'll miss a lot of the story if you play with the sound off.

Gameplay: 10
This area is where Jeanne D'Arc shows that it belongs amongst the handheld Strategy RPG greats.I could not find any flaws in the gameplay, I repeat no flaws in the gameplay what so ever.This game competes with other Strategy RPGs, by using what has always worked.You'll have at your disposable by mid game a small army, but in most cases you will only be able to take 6 in to battle.In some cases you may have less to choose because some characters are default depending on the battle.This of course adds to the tactical experience as to what members you want on the field and where to place them so you are victorious.Thankfully though the game allows you to re-visit some of the places you fought battles to make sure you can get to level up everyone in your party.

Like in any good SRPG these battles take place on a grid, and players are limited to a number of spaces they can move with an attack or use of an item/spell ends that characters turn. As players begin to find different characters with different weapons and abilities, the tactics will continue to change. Lancers, for example, can hit two spaces ahead of them, instead of one and Archers can attack from long distances causing more damage from above.

During battles, players can attack, use skills or cast magic spells. These skills can be added by collecting skill stones which players get when they defeat an enemy.Your characters can only carry six of these stones at any one time once again adding to your decision process before going in to battle, because there are more than a hundred of these stones in the game.With these stones you can choose different skills and put the on each of the characters before each battle.These skills can range from making stronger regular attacks, alter stats, or attack a number of enemies at once.Some stones can only be used by specific character types, so choose carefully.

Later in the game you will come across a character that will allow you to combine these stones. By combining two skill stones, a new one is created which will give you even more powerful abilities.This is the main reason I loved this game the customization is so deep, but yet so simple to use.Some of the new abilities created will allow players to counter enemies before they attack you, run longer distances, instill massive damage, and more.

There are also two neat and innovative features in this game that have not been seen in others.These effects are called the "Burning Aura Hotspot" and "Joint Defense".

With the "Burning Aura Hotspot" a hotspot will appear behind any enemy that is attacked and any party member who stands in that will get an attacking boost. If the "Burning Aura" falls on a character already occupying the space, the Aura will move with the character, giving them the ability to use the damage bonus elsewhere.

The other feature is "Joint Defense", which when characters are no more than one space apart, they will combine their defensive abilities reducing the damage caused by enemies significantly.This feature is especially useful when fighting a tough boss.

Bottom Line:

With Jeanne D'Arc's simple, and easy to understand battle system it is amazing how much depth there is here.Anyone with half a brain cell can pick this game up and start playing with out any frustrating with menus, customization, gameplay.I am betting most SRPG fans are probably awaiting the two other great SRPG's on the horizon for the PSP in the way of Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea for PSP.Both are due out this year and are sure to be better than excellent. But, Jeanne D' Arc is a new and original title no one has seen before on any system and should not be missed by any PSP owner.Lastly let me say that after having tried almost all the SRPG's available for the PSP I was left disappointed after every one.So what do I have to say about "Level 5"s latest addition to the PSP Library?Just two words to them...Thank YOU!!

You've got to hand it to the Wild Arms series.They definitely do things differently than several RPGs.If you're looking for an RPG that's just all around different then Wild Arms 5 is actually a treat.It doesn't reach as high as it could, though, but at least it does reach higher than most RPGs would dare to reach, and does a lot of things quite differently and out of tradition for RPGs.

Wild Arms 5 has a fairly simple story.Dean is a guy who loves exploring ruins.He's a Golem-Hunter, but he's tired of being cooped up in his town.When adventuring with his friend Rebecca, an arm suddenly falls from the sky.Clasped inside the arm is a girl named Avril.She only mentions something from the past but Dean has no clue what it means. Despite that he decides to investigate anyway.And in true RPG fashion, no one stops him.It's a simple story, but it has its own charm.

There's not a lot of character development going on in the storyline, though.For the most part, you like the characters, but you really wish you could learn more about them.This has usually been the case with all the Wild Arms games.It's no different here.Most of the dialog is good at least.However, despite the games well written dialog, its attempt at humor don't always succeed, and in some spots it hurts the dialog.In spite of all that, the game is fun.

Part of what makes Wild Arms 5 interesting is that it really does do a whole lot of things different from your traditional RPG.You've got your traditional things like battling, dungeons to explore and a myriad of sidequests to go about.But a lot of this stuff isn't presented to you in a traditional way.You'll go exploring through dungeons, but Wild Arms 5 throws tons and tons of puzzles your way, and a lot of them are actually complex and well done.Some are so mind numbing that you'll actually need a strategy guide for them.Another thing WIld Arms 5 manages to throw in is that the game will always inform you of what room your in as well as always letting you know when you've been through a door in a dungeon and whatnot.Throughout the dungeons you'll also get hints as to what to do next.In terms of dungeon crawling, Wild Arms 5 is all around different.The only games similar to it are other Wild Arms games.

There's also a platforming element going on.To get through some dungeons you'll have to jump and crouch.Not only that, but in each dungeon there are Sol Nigers.When you destroy these things, you're given the chance to completely turn off the random battles within the dungeon.A nice feature that can go a long way.

It's neat to have all these things within Wild Arms 5, but a lot of it makes dungeon crawling a cakewalk.Getting hints, always knowing where to go without having to explore for yourself.At times, it can feel like your hand is being held.

The HEX Battle system from Wild Arms 4 returns here.Much like Wild Arms 4 there's a deep strategic feel going on here.You'll move characters around to let them attack the enemy, and your enemy also moves around a lot.There are seven hexes in each battle, arranged randomly.The beauty of this battle system is how you can manipulate it and change things up.For example, you can cast a status effect on a HEX and any time someone (friend or foe) moves to that HEX they are affected with the status effect in question.Likewise, if they move off that HEX they're no longer afflicted.You can use this to your advantage, but so can your enemy.More than one person can stand on a HEX as well, and how far or close you are to an enemy does matter.

There are also Ley points.These are the elemental factors at work, that help to alter the weaknesses and strengths of those who stand in these hexes.For example if someone stands in a blue ley point they will take less damage from water based attacks, deal more damage with water based attacks, but at the same time they'll take more damage from fire based attacks, which is the weakness.It's a great battle system to mess around with.The only real problem with Wild Arms 5 is that it's disturbingly easy to take advantage of the system.The game is all around easy.Your enemies often don't take advantage of the hexes the way you will.Also, you're healed after battle.There's almost no challenge present.Some battles are also just slow going.

As with any RPG, character customization is key and Wild Arms 5 has mediums at work.Mediums allow your characters to perform more actions in combat or give them bonuses.Mediums will give you magic and skills.Like the ability to steal from your enemies or to cast spells.Some even give you the ability to change Ley points on the Hex.There's a lot to it, yet it's pretty simple to learn on the whole.

In terms of visuals, Wild Arms 5 isn't a bad looking game, but it's really not good looking either.It's colorful and there is some neat attention given to certain points, but for the most part, it's bland looking. The artwork is something to appreciate, though.The game runs pretty smoothly as well.The game also has some great music to help move things along.

Wild Arms 5 is definitely different.There are plenty of elements done here to make the game stand out.This is not your typical RPG by any means. These elements actually make Wild Arms 5 a treat.The story isn't anything special, but it's not bad either.If anything, the biggest hit against Wild Arms 5 is that it isn't difficult at all and it holds your hand a lot.

Pros:

+A well crafted battle system
+Dungeon designs are well done, full of fun puzzles to solve
+The ability to turn off random encounters (upon meeting certain conditions) is cool
+Tons of sidequests and optional bosses
+Great soundtrack

Cons:

-Despite the likeable characters, there's not much development
-The game is way too easy
-A few pitiful attempts at humor
-It can feel like the game is holding your hand at times

Looks like the first guy who reviewed this didn't pay attention enough to realize that he was buying a pc game. That's no reason to give the game a bad review. Guess that's why they have that bold print at the top that says: PLATFORM: WINDOWS.

Time Splitters Review

We played quite a bit of Time Splitters, Free Radical Design's upcoming first-person shooter, at publisher Eidos' offices yesterday afternoon, and it has left us with some very concrete impressions of the game. By focusing on multiplayer combat, Time Splitters allows for some truly maddening firefights, which all take place on grand environments that are populated by some truly zany characters.
Though all the modes that Eidos demonstrated seemed to possess their share of fun, none impressed us as much as the game's multiplayer mode. And with good reason: According to Eidos, all the other modes will play second-fiddle and will serve solely as a means by which to unlock extra features - character models and such - in the multiplayer mode.

The multiplayer mode is fairly cut-and-dried in presentation. Prior to the matches, you and your opponents select your characters, after which player one will set the parameters for the match such as number of kills needed to win, the weapons and bots present, and the arena in which it'll all go down. Since the game is being developed to resemble, aesthetically, a series of B-movies, all manner of odd characters and stages are present - from '70s cop-show detectives to aliens and robots - and they are inhabiting places like expansive gothic cathedrals, spooky graveyards, and otherworldly spacecrafts. Some of the battles you'll engage in will prove to be truly absurd: Imagine a muscular, daunting space alien running and gunning around a venerable temple and shooting at you with a blunderbuss, and you'll surely agree.

From a gameplay perspective, most importantly, everything unfolds rather well. During the single-player mode, the action was flowing at upward of 60 frames per second, and, even during the four-player, split-screen matches, the frame rate remained quite healthy and never took a substantial blow. Indeed, even with five bots in the arenas and four players blasting away at each other, the game remained wonderfully playable and technically intact.

The game's other modes seemed functional enough, though rather single-minded in flavor. Unlike the intricate, multifaceted construct an FPS level has evolved into, Time Splitters' levels remain rather geared toward the mowing down of bodies, with the occasional key-fetch objective thrown in for good measure. Single-player and two-player co-op modes are included, both of which play wonderfully from a technical standpoint.

The game also includes a level editor, which, when demonstrated, seemed quite easy to use, versatile, and fun. Arenas with up to eight floors can be constructed, and there are a variety of texture sets with which to decorate the arenas. All manner of factors can be tweaked - from weapon availability and bot population to lighting effects. Depending on the types of peripherals developed for the PS2, would-be level designers could quite possibly make their arenas available to the online masses.

Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing Review

I like many who bought this game am a boxing fan. With EA Sports pulling it's sucessfull simulation "Knockout Kings" off the ps2 platform, I was left to look elsewhere for "sweet science"(boxing) action. After months of looking and finding just old boxing games or cartoonish boxing games I thought I was out of luck. Then came "Mike Tyson Heavyweight Boxing". I had always liked Mike Tyson and remembered playing "Mike Tyson's punchout" for the Nintendo Entertainment System so I decided to buy.
When I got the game home I was very excited because the graphics looked very solid. However the Gameplay is another story. When I had my first fight I was appauled at how little strategy it took to fight. It was usually just stand in the middle of the ring and hit buttons to knock over your opponent. However, if you do get knocked over forhget about getting up because in some scenarios you have to hit three buttons at once. Three buttons in ten seconds! Get Realistic!
Secondly, with every fight you have you earn money to improve your boxer. While this is realistic it causes a problem because a person could just get knocked out many times and builld up to be a great fighter without winning one fight. Once again kind of a cheap thing to do.
The create a fighter mode gives many options except every face they offer looks like Tysons. Oh and when you get done creating yourself, you have the option to acctually spar(fight) with Tyson in training. If you can spar with Tyson in training why would you want to work to get to fight him in career mode. Kind of defeats the purpose.
The sound is one of the brighter aspects of this game. When fighting you will hear your corner or the audience giving youadvice even though this advice is not very good or useful. This game has announcers but they only speak between rounds or after the fight when showing highlights. The referee will appear at the beeginning of the round and then dissapear. Once again NOT REALISTIC!
Overall, this game looks like it was rushed out onto the shelves to fast. The developers at Codemasters should've thought weather they wanted to make this title an Arcade game or a realistic simulation. There were no answers to that before buying this game and after buying this game I must say I'm still confused. All I can say is that the Codemasters just relied on the Mike Tyson name alone to sell this game and it might work once but it won't work again. The codemaster slogan, "genius at play" doesn't work for this game because their is nothing too genius about this game and if Mike Tyson expects to get out of bankruptcy by the sales of this game well he better hope he gets a rematch with Lewis because this game doesn't solve his problems it just causes more of them.

Mummy Returns Review

I picked up this packed, having enjoyed the two Mummy movies, and thinking it would be cool to play a game where you can either be O'Connell or Imhotep.Unfortunately, the game was just poorly designed.Graphics collision errors abound, resulting in your character being able to partially go through certain objects, or stand in empty space without falling.These things detract from the game and make it frustrating to play.I really did try to look past the downsides, as I am generally easy-to-please video game-wise, but this one just wasn't as much fun as it should have been.The basic concepts were ok...you are exploring an underground temple, your son gets trapped and you must free him, amongst other quests, but the design was likely rushed to coincide with the DVD release, resulting in bugs and design flaws galore.I'd recommend buying the DVD by itself, or at least renting the game before you plunk down all that money for it.

Final Fantasy Anthology: Collector's Package Review

For years, I have heard two things (and I will avoid numerals for this review...).One...that Final Fantasy 7 was the best Final Fantasy and had the best Final Fantasy villain.Two...that Final Fantasy 6 was the best Final Fantasy and had the best Final Fantasy villain.This is where I've found that there are three camps of Final Fantasy fans (although it applies to most RPGs, but I'm sticking with this series for right now.).

Camp 1: The Old School Die Hard---these fans tend to love the originals because of their nostalgic value, medieval setting, and more majestic storylines.
Camp 2: The Next Generation Die Hard---these fans tend to love the later entries because of their showcasing of technology, dark/bleak setting (a la Blade Runner), and innovative systems like limit breaks and materia.
Camp 3: The Die Hard Final Fantasy Fan (what'd ya think I was going to say?)---these fans tend to respect and love all the games, and maybe dislike just one or two but whose reasons have no relation to Camps 1 and 2.

Obviously, Camp 1 will often claim Final Fantasy 6 or 9 as the best entry (maybe even 4), while Camp 2 will very, very likely claim that 7 is the best.Camp 3 is mixed, although I've found a few of those happen to like the third game the best.

As much as I respect and enjoy Final Fantasy 7, I gravitate towards the first camp because that's the style that I grew up on.I like swords, sorcery, and high stakes.I keep an open mind, but a game like Final Fantasy 4 or Chrono Trigger is like a soldier returning home for me.Anyways, without further explanation, here's my review for Final Fantasy 6.

This game has a very complex plot and despite its totally separate storyline from 7, it is a wonderful lead-in for that game.The world has previously gone through a horrific "War of the Magi" in which the Espers' powers were misused and brought great destruction (Espers are Summons, essentially).The Espers were given free will but their powers were sealed, never again to be used by man.The main character, essentially, is Terra (or Tina, depending on the translation you're playing), a half-Esper/half-human that went through excruciating circumstances before taking control of her life.There's a slew of characters you meet in the entire game; Locke is a treasure hunter with the Steal technique.Edgar is the king of Figaro, an engineer, and twin brother of Sabin.Sabin had forsaken his royal heritage to study Martial Arts.Celes is a former imperial soldier who also has Esper powers due to their experiments on her (and can absorb magic through her swords).Cyan was the king of Doma, a kingdom of Samurai, and he seeks revenge on Kefka.There's also Shadow, a ninja with a mysterious past and has a dog named Interceptor that aids him when he needs it.There are other memorable characters that include Setzer (a gambler) and a feral child named Gau, but I'll leave you to discover the others (preferably by playing the game, but I suppose I can't stop you from Wikipedia-ing it).

Although it appears Emperor Gestahl is the main villain in the beginning, our main antagonist is Kefka.While other villains like Sephiroth (7) and Kuja (9) have interesting motives, Kefka has my stamp of approval for being the absolute best villain in the series.I've got three reasons why.

1. He is the most ruthless villain in the series.He wipes out the entire kingdom of Doma by poisoning the water (including Cyan's family), captures the Esper god statues and unleashes terror, and shows unconditional contempt for the good qualities in humanity.He turns on his emperor in the blink of an eye, hungry for the power of the Espers.
2. He is one of the goofiest tyrants I've ever seen in a video game.Before he marches off to Figaro, he orders his soldiers to wipe the sand from and off his boots (Figaro is in the desert).He also torments Cyan for his misfortune, repeatedly laughing in his face.When the heroes confront him before the final battle, he says HATE HATE HATE over and over and over again, shaking his fists in an anime-sort of way.He also has that funny laugh that makes its way into Chrono Trigger.
3. He has one of the coolest boss themes in any video game, period.

The game takes on a late industrial/western feel to it, largely in part to the artists and Nobou Uematsu's variant score.Uematsu hit a bullseye in scoring this puppy; from Terra's slow, journeyman-like theme to Shadow's spaghetti western-style theme, to some of the catchiest battle music you've ever heard in your life, to the ragtime/opera suites in the more artsy sections of the game...the music score overall is perhaps Uematsu's most diverse music that I've ever heard in a video game.There are majestic moments that will remind you of Final Fantasies 4 or 9, but here is where the two camps merge into one.Magic is dying out in the storyline, and the music reflects that.

Awesome music, adventorous map (there's two "worlds" by the way, play and find out...), complex plot, interesting characters (ALL of them having a unique skill) and the ability to have up to four fighting at once, innovative battle systems (there's three points in the game where you split your characters into two or three teams, depending on where you are in the game, and you can switch between them and fight a lot of battles), gameplay longevity without ever getting boring...I have not found any fault in this game, and while I do find it to be a long game, it does have a replay value to it.

So who do I recommend this to?Because of its difficulty level (which isn't impossible, but it may be troublesome if you've never played an RPG before), I might suggest trying Final Fantasies 4 or 7 first, but if you happen to be in the third camp that loves both of those games, I guarantee that you will enjoy this game.It is the perfect lead-in to Final Fantasy 7 by aesthetics and setting alone, and I can't think of a better way to intrigue both the medieval Fantasy fans and the more modern Fantasy fans.I also guarantee that you will love the characters and love their backstories.

Saddle up, turn on the nostalgic dial, grab your weapon of choice, and march into battle for one of the greatest adventures that Squaresoft (er, Square Enix...) has to offer.I see no reason why you would dislike this game.Perhaps the best Final Fantasy game in existence, with FF4 and FF9 in close proximity and FF7 following those.

2. Super Mario RPG (SNES, the perfect beginner's RPG)
3. Final Fantasy 4 (worthy RPG for the first-time fan)

The voices are very close to the characters they are playing. (ex naruto actually sounds like naruto)

story stops after you free gaara.
the more you increase your levels, your power bar doesn't really grow. For example,I have Naruto at level 55 but somehow Itachi at level 34 has a power bar more than mine. How come someone with a lower level can beat me, someone who has a higher level so easily?

Overall this game is fun but needs to be extended. I was hoping to play as 9 tailed naruto, pain, not even jaira was in the game or lady sunade.

Final Fantasy XI: Chains of Promathia is the first North America expansion pack for the popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) Final Fantasy XI. Like the main game, it is rated T (Teen: Blood, violence), but the content largely resolves around battles with cartoonish opponents, and will be appropriate for most children sophisticated enough to understand its basic controls.

The expansion adds a dozen or more new areas, many new quests, and a major new mission arc, substantially extending the game plot. However, much or all of the new content is locked behind either relatively high level restrictions or challenging quests that cannot be completed without the assistance of a solid group of players. This is not an expansion that alters the experience a new player has with the game -- instead, it extends the life of the game for people who have already played it for months or years.

Much of the criticism leveled against the expansion is that it does little to add new features to the game, such as new races or jobs. Square-Enix, in designing the expansion, has definitely chosen to focus on adding more places to go and things to kill, rather than new toys for a starting character to play with.

This expansion is really only of interest to players who have already sunk 100+ hours into Final Fantasy XI; if this describes you, and you haven't already purchased the expansion, do so tonight. If you just want to try Final Fantasy XI out, you do not need this expansion to do so.

Pros:
* Nice new areas for higher-level characters.
* Level-capped areas let parties of disparate levels play together.
* New plot available for players who have finished the main game plot.
* Areas such as Promyvion and Bibiki Bay are visually gorgeous.

Cons:
* Most of the content is not accessible to lower-level players; some is out of reach of even higher-level casual players.
* This is NOT a standalone expansion; you must have purchased the original game to play it.

I own the boxed collection and the hard bound strategy guide. Marvelous! Truly a collectors item.I cannot go into great detail, about the game, since it has been awhile that I have played it. I will say that both this and the first one, Lunar Star Silver Story Complete, were great RPG's for the PSX.(I am an RPG HOUND)The graphics are nice for the time and the music lovely! Gameplay is fluid, interesting, addictive and challenging at parts. There are also some puzzles to be solved. A very fun and versatile RPG with a deep story that will haunt you long after you have completed the game. VERY rare but worth considering for your collection and enjoyment. You will not be disappointed.Do NOT miss this one!(I suggest you also play the first one mentioned above.) Although I have not played both in awhile they left a lasting impression, for me, in my RPG history as having been a great experience in game playing.

Warhammer 40k: Squad Command Review

For everyone who--like me--got really excited about this game because of hours of fun with Dawn of War (DoW, also published by THQ) rather than because you love the table top game BE WARNED.While Squad Command (SC) taps into the darkly religious galactic battlefield that is Warhammer 40k it doesn't convey the frantic ultra-violence so palpable in DoW and its expansions.That's no surprise, however, given that SC is turn-based.

And that's no surprise, either.Turn-based strategy is a genre in the exclusive purview of handhelds these days.This game is no FF Tactics but it does share some vaguely RPG-like characteristics with that title and its progeny.For example, you can micromanage your squad members in terms of weaponry.But this is more about being true to the table top experience of point-building, I suspect (having never played it), than getting you attached to your troops.They do change from mission to mission, after all. I wonder, and encourage someone with knowledge of the table top rules to comment on, to what degree those rules are part of this game a la D&D Tactics.

In terms of music, graphics, and overall presentation, SC is about average or a bit above average for PSP.It will neither knock your socks off nor make your eyes bleed.In that regard, it's not a great introduction to Warhammer 40k.The 40k world relies heavily upon its legendary aesthetic and this platform can't sell it like a beautiful, Pentium-powered PC game.Part and parcel of that aesthetic draw is the wide array of faction-specific designs: you can look at any unit and know which faction it belongs to.This game, which only covers Space Marines and Chaos Space Marines, doesn't mine into that wealth of creativity.But it does cover those two factions in terms of troops, weapons, and vehicles pretty well.I haven't seen them yet but there are even supposed to be Grey Knights in SC!

The biggest drawback about SC, however, is that there are only fifteen missions.I don't know what the capacity of a UMD is but I savor every moment of 40k that doesn't involve incredibly expensive unpainted miniatures.Fifteen missions are too few.There is obviously no skirmish mode against the AI to make up for it although you can play Chaos in multiplayer.Ultimately, thirty bucks for fifteen missions is very price effective when you consider how much dough you'd need to shell out for fifteen missions in table top.The bottom line is that if you really like the 40k universe but can't afford table top, this will make you happy if only for a short while.But if you're looking for more DoW, look somewhere else . . . and tell me when you find it.

Anyone wanting to know how good game design is done should look at Dungeon Explorer.

The game is balanced perfectly to keep you progressing through.There are no points in this game where you are not making progress.But that is not to say you are not punished for your deaths.

Basically, if you are on a quest and you die in the depths of the dungeon, you get to keep all your loot and experience, but you are punished by being placed back in the city.You also have to pay again to get the quest.If you do not have enough gold, you will need to go in the dungeon and work for some.

If you are not on a quest, however, you will die AND lose all your loot and experience.This perfect balance keeps the game moving at a great pace and never leaves you feeling that you are not making progress.

The graphics are suitable dark and gothic and each dungeon looks unique with a great deal of detail in the surroundings.The animations are also very well done and everything looks fluid and realistic.

Imagine an old school RPG game with multiple levels of depth and strategy in the statistic, complete with several party members that you must also manage, weapon crafting, coop magic, etc...Now imagine the old school arcade game Gauntlet.Dungeon Explorer is a beautiful collision between the two.

I love RPGs, but not necessarily the cutesy whimsical style that appears often on the PSP.Dungeon Explorer is darker, rich, and well worth your time if you share similar tastes.

This game is just horrible.Levels are boring and uninspired.Player control is weak (jumping, using magic).Enemies are not difficult to beat, just annoying (they instantly come back).Gameplay is repetitive.Destroy a flower, then another, and another, and another...And the character "dialogue" started repeating within seconds.Even cheap as this game is, it's not worth it.I had read it was like Spyro (which I think is a great game, clever with very smooth control), which is why I got it, but it's nothing like Spyro, it's just lousy and boring.

Time Crisis 3 Review

The Time Crisis series has been a mainstay in arcades for years.The game gives fast-paced shooting gallery action set against a high-energy storyline, and playing in 2P cooperative mode with the attached pistols is a lot of fun.This package gives you the opportunity to virtually replicate the arcade in your own living room using your PS2. . . provided you have the right type of television.

This package contains the game itself as well as two Guncon2 light gun controllers.The Guncon2's are molded from (unfortunately) orange plastic, solid enough to feel substantial without being too heavy.They connect to both your PS2 via a USB cable and to your TV via a simple RCA video plug.All of the cables are included in the package, but the USB cables are very short (around five feet), so don't plan on sitting very far from the TV when you're playing.

It's important to note that the Guncon2's are only compatible with tube TVs connected to the PS2 via standard-quality RCA A/V cables (the red/white/yellow jacks).So if you've got a rear-projection or plasma/LCD TV, the Guncon2's won't respond.No matter what type of TV you're using, the Guncon2's don't allow you to connect your PS2 to the TV via S-Video or component cables.If you're used to one of these higher-quality video connections, then the first time you boot up the PS2 with the RCA A/V, it will look overly sharp and aliased (jagged edges on curves).The game's superior graphics help you get past this, but it's still too bad that you can't use the Guncon2's in conjunction with the best picture possible.It is possible to play the game with the standard PS2 controller, but aim is frustrating the entire gameplay experience suffers greatly.

Still, despite these setbacks, the gameplay with the Guncon2's makes it all worth it.Once you get them connected (there are simple instructions printed on the lid of the package's box), calibrating the Guncon2 is very easy - you'll be ready to play in minutes.I found the aim to be surprisingly accurate, although the new "weapon change" scheme that Time Crisis 3 introduces can be a little troublesome.You now fire at the weapon list at the bottom of the screen to change - I've accidentally switched weapons while trying to take out a crouching enemy, only to waste more valuable ammo on my next shots.Unfortunately, there's no option to configure one of the numerous buttons on the Guncon2 to handle weapons switching instead.In fact, the only button used on the Guncon2 (besides the trigger) is a conveniently-placed d-pad where the hammer of the pistol would be - it's used to control your crouching behind objects in lieu of the foot pedal used at the arcade.

You can play single-player and let the PS2 control the second agent, although from my experience, he pretty much stands around and leaves all of the work to you.The two-player cooperative mode splits the screen just like the arcade mode, showing the same action from each player's point of view.This is especially impressive on widescreen TVs.The game also supports linking of two PS2 units so that each player can have his own TV all to himself (linking cable not included here).

The game is a faithful port of the arcade original but with some additional mission content and unlockables.All told, there is probably eight to ten hours of end-to-end play here.The long-term allure of the game is in perfecting your routines, weapons management and marksmanship.But ultimately, it is a straightforward shooting gallery game with a purely linear plot and nothing more.

Now that the price has dropped on this package, it's an outstanding value.The game is a fast-paced roller coaster of blowing away the bad guys and the inclusion of two Guncon2 controllers means you're ready to play the game the way that it was intended.It's a must-have for fans of the arcade original and highly recommended to anyone who likes shooters.

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter Review

This installment in the series plays very differently.Everyone complains about the new SOL system in the game.To put it bluntly it works something like this:
1)Make your way through a dungeon.
2)Either die or quit the game
3)Choose to either restart the dungeon with roughly 10% of you r
experience (i.e. "party xp") and all your earned cash,
or,
Restart the entire game with 10% experience and all your cash.
4)Repeat until strong enough to get to the next save point.
P.S.every time you transform into a dragon (Ryu) you consume energy that cannot be replenished unless you start the game over entirely!
The motivating factor compelling one to finish this game is the frustration of it being so darn difficult.On the plus side, the battle system is really fun and some of the attacks look super-cool.Plus, there's a mini-game where you build a fairy village (like in other bof games) which is totally fun as well.

The one player mode in this game is great.It has beautiful graphics and unmatched F1 sounds (you can actually hear the wind when passing signs).No opions on building your own driver/car, but I love the Bimmer the way it is anyway, and it would make it difficult to perform as a team if it offered custom cars.I love the fact that up to 4 people can play at a time (22 people in a time trial mode), but I haven't found a way to race friends, and the regular grid which was a slight disapointment.I'm not so sure the wrecks are very realistic, I have been pretty rough on my car and only destroyed it beyond repair once, but the pit stops are beautiful, and the paint gets scrached from debris throughout the race. I would definatly recomend this game for the F1 enthusiast, but due to the level of difficulty, it may not be for everyone.Thanks for reading.Anubis 328

A microgame package w/200 some games, funky(in a bad way kind of )graphics, and forced weird "adult" humour make this feel and play like the dumbed down and sleazy version of a WWare game.Made by Atari the game does have high points when TEMPEST, ZAXXON, LUNAR LANDER and other aracade classics are given a turn in the mix but these retro segments are all to brief, and before you know it its back to more "zany" movies of the supposed lead character of the alleged story (who is kind of nauseating)Their is some unlockable content(boss games,etc) and it can be fun in brief sessions, but in the end it ends up feeling like a ripoff of a much better series of games and just a bit above alot of HB style games in that it doesn't crash.The pixelated asthetic and gathering of pixels tries to give an old flavor to the game sometimes it suceeds and sometimes it just looks cheap and old.There is an extra set of 70 downloadable games they can be played one at a time or in "playslists". Its a decent rental for MICROGAME fans and a possible purchase at under 20 for the casual gamer but 200 hundred more microgames harder difficulty and Zero movies of the DORKY GUY would have helped this package out alot.

Eve of Extinction has not been getting much hype. I've seen previews here and there in magazines and they're put in thirds of a page.Meanwhile, games like State of Emergency get tons of coverage, yet in my humble opinion, fail horribly gamewise (not saleswise). In this case, who cares about hype?
Eve of Extinction puts you in the shoes of Josh Calloway, an ex-employee of Wisdom, a biogenetics corporation with a secret agenda of ruling the world. After discovering their plan of world domination, he and his girlfriend and ex-coworker Eliel Evergrand try to escape but to no avail. The two are captured and Eliel's soul is placed in a Legacy, a weapon made from the fusion of a human soul and an ancient metal, codenamed E.O.E. As Josh and E.O.E. are being transported, things go awry and Josh manages to escape with E.O.E. Thus, your quest to discover Wisdom's true intentions and restoring Eliel back to her body begins.
E.O.E. is the next step of evolution in the Old-School Brawler genre, of which Streets of Rage was a benchmark. Throughout the game you utilize E.O.E. which as you progress through the game can become a variety of weapons from a giant axe to a crossbow. From here you can switch weapons midcombo to extend and maximize damage. To add another dimension to the gameplay, each weapon has a Legacy Drive that can be activated. Using the Legacy Drive in itself is something to master. And for you 3D skeptics out there, the lock on button (L2) is just perfect.
The graphics are very nice. Not Final Fantasy X caliber but it's still awesome. Control is spot-on and the challenge factor first time around is moderate. The story has a couple twists and is very good in itself. The music is actually not bad and I found myself humming to some of them. And as a plus, this game is very anime-influenced.
All in all, E.O.E. is a worthy addition to any gamer's PS2 collection.

This is one of the first psx games I owned. It's an awesome game, and it's incredibly addictive. The fights are awesome, and so are the camera angles. This game is a little outdated, but it still rules. This is a better game to have if you have a brother or sister, or friends come over a lot. 2 Player is awesome, but playing against the computer can get boring. I would seriously recommend this game to duke it out with your buddies!

Warriors Orochi Review

Unlike previous Warriors games where you pretty much knew where you were fighting next, Warriors Orochi brings many of the scenarios from the last games together and gives a random matchup of warriors to use throughout each.

The game features four new story lines, and a new Weapon-Fusion system. It literally lets you create your own unique weapons. And, no longer do you have to use one warrior through one story at a time. You now make a team of three to switch between at anytime a-la Sonic Heroes, only more refined.

The storylines are great, however, some of the best voice actors from the original games have been replaced or given new accents. It throws you off for a second but still sounds great. There is no Create-A-Warrior this time, again, and the enemies are now a lot tougher as you rise in difficulty, which makes Chaos mode exactly as hard as it sounds.

My favorite part of this game is the team set-up, which has to be Koei's best idea to date, next to Warriors Gundam. Many folks have talked about Legendary Matchups in this game, and they do work quite well, however, it's best to experiment.

Koei's made a great game. I recommend buying it outright if you're a Warriors fan and renting it if you're not so sure, but for forty dollars, you can't go wrong.

Having only played the Japanese version of this I think I lost something in not understanding the dialog but Im told it's rather humorous. It's originality is definitely the best the title has going for it, and while odd makes for a very fun game.
Except it's short...real short. I recommend renting it first. There is definitely re-playability but only if your not easily distracted by other games like I am.

Ninja Shadow of Darkness Review

Hi there. I love this game, for the fact that it has all these little extra surprises. Wether it is opening a treasure chest, or the chuckle I get each time I splice a skelleton in half, and it's lower body half is still kicking me. Too funny.The game does have its irritating part, where it is just a bit too difficult, but at least there are several safepoints along each level.The cheat codes for this game are too cool as well. I suggest that if you buy the game, you look them up. The magic move actually turns into a big ole thunder/lighting that eliminates everyone in close proximity. And for the price, this game is definately worth a shot.I may not be a die-hard playstation nut, but I sure like playing this ninja game best, out of the 20+ games we own.

Everquest II: Desert of Flames Review

I play EQ2 and want to counter some of the lies by previous reviewers.

You can sell while offline,you don't need to be logged into the game to sell. If you stay logged in then people can come to you and not pay the 20% broker fee, giving those merchants an advantage in big transactions. But the person stating that you MUST stay logged in is 100% wrong.

I pay the basic fee and get more than four characters. If you pay the extra fee you do get more characters but you also get many features like being able to talk with guildies while you're not logged in and free access to the mini-expansions. The statement that you only get 4 characters is 100% wrong.

At no time in this game has SOE charged $10 for content. The basic subscription covers a lot of updates, all received for free. As of this writing,Live Update 18 has been in place for a while. SOE occasionally introduces "mini-expansions" called Adventure Packs that they charge a few bucks for, or that you get for free if you subscribe to the bigger plan (see above). If I remember right, one Adv Pack was $5 and the other was $7. Whether they're worth the price is a matter of opinion. The statement that you must pay extra for updates is 100% wrong.

Zone times really depend on your PC. It's not a seemless process like it is in many games, by the same token you always have somewhere to run to for safety. Zoning for me generally takes 15 seconds for a smaller zone, 30 seconds for a larger one. Only someone with a very slow PC will see the 1-2 minutes the original poster stated and if you have that slow a PC, you really won't enjoy raid level content until you upgrade.

The game can be played solo but it will take you quite a while to reach the level cap if you do. The best way is a mix of solo and grouping. Some classes solo better than others (caster and hybrid fighter classes mostly) and some are more designed for grouping (pure fighter and healers mostly). There's a variety of styles supported but soloing to 60 will take longer than some other games do. A good group can really get you moving and I don't have much problem getting groups unless I'm in during a light population time.

There's almost no high-CG sequences (around 3-4 including the opening). The end was kinda cheesy. I would suggest to wait for a price drop before buying it. "Final Fantasy" series are still better than this one.

Star Wars Demolition Review

Lucas Arts is great at providing the atmosphere of the Star Wars movies in all of their games, and Star Wars Demolition is no exception.Unfortunately, atmosphere doesn't sell games, gameplay does, and Star Wars Demolotion is lacking badly in that department.
Graphically, this game is quite similar to Vigilante 8, with the exception that the levels that you can compete on are on Tatooine, the Death Star II, Hoth, Etc Etc.There are many vehicles to choose from including the Land Speeder, Snow Speeder, Boba Fett's Jet Pack, an AT AT and a few others.
The atmosphere is great, the opening credits are cool, there is plenty for the Star Wars fan to love. However the problem here is that this game is unusally hard. After playing Battle mode for 3 consecutive hours, I lost every battle I fought but one.Some characters you fight against seem more mobile and harder to kill than others. This would be ok, but it often seems like you are being teamed up on by mulitple enemies at once.The limitations of the vehicles makes it impossible to overcome the fights where you are outnumbered. This makes victory impossible for a single player.
Where some players might find this game favorable would be in the two player mode, where you can fight against each other on the different terrains, with any of the various vehichles. This portion of the game is pretty cool.
Overall the graphics are adequate, although there is lots of popup. The music caters to the Star Wars atmosphere and is good. The gameplay suffers from a high level of difficulty.
As a diehard Star Wars fan, I can not recommend this game. Rent this one first if you feel like you must own it.

Perhaps you've seen the reviews from professional game critics, and you've seen this game is getting about a 6.x out of 10.That doesn't paint a very pretty picture for this game, nor would I call it an accurate review.Everyone seems to agree that this game will not lure anyone who doesn't play the Marvel TCG to want to play it, thus it gets a less-than-desirable score.That may be true, but for those who do already play it, this game is alot of fun.

The game gives players of the Marvel TCG pretty much what they'd want.There's a 2 single player campaigns, Hero and Villain.They seem to be pretty lengthy campaigns, especially when each game will take you between 15-20 minutes to complete.Victory will give you points to buy more cards you can use to customize your deck(s).There's also online multiplayer, which to me, is where the real treat is in this game.Simply put, if you like the Marvel TCG, you'll like this game.

There are tutorials for those who haven't.They're somewhat wordy, and may not introduce the rules as well as if you were playing the real game.It had been a few years since I'd touched the game, but the tutorials did a good enough job to refresh my memory.

There's not much to say about graphics, since this is a card game, but what's there does the job.I especially like the abundance of artwork throughout the game and menus.The videos are done in a comic book style, which is fun.The music is so-so, and there's no voice acting.Fine by me, since most comic book games feature some really cheesy voice acting.

Bottom line, if you like the game already, this is a very good buy.It's a well put together game, and has plenty to keep you occupied. It does not deserve low score just because it isn't for everyone.It's not as expensive as other PSP games, so that a plus.I'm having alot of fun with it.

Breath of Fire III Review

I have played many RPG's. Final Fantasy being the most note worthy.
I consider this to be as good as 6 and 7 were.
This is bright and colourful.It makes full use of the ultra slick range of colours the PSP is capable of.
It doesn't suffer from page load breaks all the time like some of the PSP games I've played.
Follow the merry band of little robbing monkies until they get split up.
The lead character becomes the central role then as you search the length and breadth of the world to find your lost companions.
Sounds easy enough, but add to that mutants, competitions, talking onions and turning into a dragon and you've got the recipe for hours of gameplay fun.
Theres a game sharing mode and a fishing mode.When you don't feel like you want to enter the main game you can do the fishing challenges instead which is highly addictive.
When the lead character cries, it makes you laugh!

I've not played the original but can well imagine how good it must have been.
It's a very good game full of seamless RPG fun.

From the Great Wall of China to the canals of Venice, Tomb Raider II is the rare case in which a sequel is better than an original. In fact, I find this game to be my favorite of the series. In it the legendary Lara Croft sets out to find the Dagger of Xion. In her quest she navigates the globe, and even takes a couple of trips to strange and magical new worlds.
Tomb Raider II offers significant improvements over the original, and its game play exceeds the other games that follow in the series. The game has drastically overhauled weapons and artificial intelligence. Though the puzzles are not as hard as later versions, they still are quite difficult. Lara has new moves, many new weapons, and more dangerous foes. What more could a Tomb Raider fan - or even the casual gamer - ask for?
I highly recommend this game, whether you are an avid Tomb Raider fan or somebody new to the series. I don't believe you will be disappointed - in fact, you will probably find many hours of action filled entertainment. And if you do enjoy it, I strongly recommend other games in this series.

Given that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater is bound to be rented out at your local video store, and always sold out at retail outlets, and never *ever*available used, this game can give you a temporary skateboarding fix.Itappears to use the same engine as Pro Skater, with a similar look and feelto both games.
The difference is in the details.Tony Hawk lets youstring together hundreds of moves to make wicked combos.Street Skaterseems to have about three moves per character.TH requires real skill tobe land tricks, SS lets you land flat on your face and still pull off atrick.TH's control configurations are more intuitive -- maybe it'sbecause I learned them first, but it seems like SS is harder to control. Street Skater's levels are massive, like TH's, but since each level istimed and has a linear progression you have to make from start to finish,it's not easy to explore.
The only plus on SS' side is that it has askate park editor, which is fun to play around with.But I found myselfwishing I could create a park and skate it with Tony instead of SS fourcharacters, and TH2 is coming soon and features a better editor.
Like Isaid, SS is a temporary fix.You'll only go through its three levels somany times before you'll crave more levels, more space, more goals, morecharacters, and better play control, and you'll find yourself getting TonyHawk for whatever price you can.

Echo Night: Beyond Review

What if they based a game on the movie "The Sixth Sense?" Place it on the Moon and you have "Echo Night Beyond," a good entry into the often neglected "adventure" genre, now cross bred with survival horror.

It is not for those who are without patience, but it does offer plenty of fun for adventure gaming fans. There is no combat, only exploration, running from ghosts, and puzzle solving (helping ghosts find peace by finding whatever they lost). Some critics claim it is repetitive, but I think it works well, especially for more mature gamers.

The game is presented in a FPS mode, with only a heart monitor to let u know your health status, and a battery operated flashlight to light your environment. The flashlight's battery charge is a concern, and must be managed by locating battery packs scattered about the station.

Your objective is to try and locate your fiance after the crash of your shuttle, into what seems to be an abandoned Moon base. A sub-plot built around what happened to the Moon base prior to your arrival is uncovered as you explore the station, encountering ghosts, and viewing ghostly events shown to you in video cameras.

As u explore, you will encounter ghosts who will either be benign or evil. Evil ghosts are encountered in rooms filled with a mysterious fog (non-volumetric). When u encounter an evil ghost, your only option is to run like hell before your heart stops from fear. But, with an objective to save the souls of the dead, u still need to communicate with the ghosts, even the evil ones. Find what they are looking for and u can release their souls from their torment.

There is plenty of exploration, along with some back and forth item quests, but it never reaches the absurd level found in the Resident Evil series.

The environments, lighting, menus, and sound are absolutely great and thoroughly immersive. Voice Over talent is good -- international accents are well done and some seem genuine. The ghosts could use some more polygons -- but the environment and menus really shine. The controls are good as long as u use the 3rd controller set-up, a typcal FPS configuration using the dual sticks to move and look, and the triggers for actions. The default set-up, typical of FROM's JP games, is amazingly bad -- so I am grateful for the extra controller configurations that Western gamers are more accustomed to.

I doubt most "kids" will have the patience for ENB -- it is a very passive experience, like most adventure games, but adults will enjoy it. The fear is not as intense or strange as the Silent Hill series, but when a evil ghost does appear, the screen and controller start to shake, your flashlight dims, and it invokes a Fatal Frame style "get me the hell out of here" panic in the player that is quite effective.

If you like adventure games, and horror, you will find it well worth your time. I give this game a solid B, with a tilt to a B+/A- for effort, or if u really enjoy the genre. I also recommend it as a solid game for all ages, especially adults who realize that adult games do not need gratuitous violence and scantly clad women to be fun.

Suikoden Tactics Review

Usually, I tend to dismiss a lot of beloved games as "Eh, they can wait", but not so with Suikoden Tactics. The Suikoden Series is one of my favorites, so about a week after the game came out, I snatched it right up. I was pleased to see Suikoden with a Strategy RPG turn since these sorts of games are a load of fun for me. This game is good on its own, but great if you're already a Suikoden fan and would like to see some of Suikoden IV explained more.

Sound/Music: 8/10

The music for the most part is just excellent. The songs used for the Kooluk Empire in particular(like El Eal and Graska) are just flat out beautiful and reminds of why Suikoden has some of the best music ever. The battle music is fairly decent too and suits the situations quite nicely. It tends to stick with you without being too much of a distraction. I generally liked the music and is a must for video game music buffs. The only song I didn't care for much was the beginning song as I found the singing rather grating, but I have no doubt that others will enjoy it.

This game does have voice acting and it's actually fairly decent. I've heard better, but I've also heard much worse. Kyril's voice can be very grating, but Andarc's and Seneca's really aren't that bad. I'd say it's farily average overall.

Story: 8/10

The story is more of a companion piece to Suikoden IV more than just a standalone(you can transfer data from Suikoden IV) and it actually does help improve Suikoden IV quite a bit since ST includes many of the returning characters, reveals parts of S4 that weren't quite explained(although I wish more was done with Troy), and has the same atmospheric feel.

Suikoden Tactics takes place before and after Suikoden 4, starting out in Raziel where a young Kyril and his group find young Snow and Siobahn(my name for hero 4). They discover a fish creature that had died because of a Rune Cannon and things go on from there. The entire purpose of the game is to find Rune Cannons, research them and destroy them. Of course, it's never that simple given the game is full of twists, turns(some you could see a mile off, but the twists are still there), emotional scenes, and political intrigue typical of the Suikoden series.

What really makes this game(and basically all of Suikoden) stand out is the characterization. Kyril might not be too dynamic, but he's powerful. Andarc and Seneca provide very interesting and oftentimes amusing moments. The same could be said for a lot of the characters there. Old favorites return and one of the new characters almost entirely steals the show(should have been a story character, but isn't, which is a shame). Overall, very solid and what I expect from Suikoden.

Graphics: 7/10

The graphics of the characters could have been much better. The portraits are fine and look great, but beyond that, the characters look a little too distorted for my taste. Not bad, but far from the best Suikoden has had to offer. The sweeping scenes before the battles and the town backgrounds showed some beautiful scenery, but nothing that goes beyond typical strategy RPGs. The spells, however, look beautiful, which is quite usual in the series. Overall, just good. Nothing special, except for the spells.Gameplay: 9/10

To put it simply, this game is crack. The battle system is fun and you can actually have conversations in battle that increase "good will", something that makes someone protect, assist and grow angry over another being attacked. "Good Will" also helps gaining Cooperative(or Unite) Attacks. The elemental grids, which increase or decrease abilities depending on compatability, help give this game a unique feel. The only real complaint is that if the character is not a "story character", he/she could die and be permanently removed from the game. Not a large complaint since it's fairly easy to avoid if you have the right strategy and this sort of thing has occured in all the Suikoden games. Beyond all that, it uses the tried and true methods of most other Strategy Games. Not a real flaw though since it works like a charm in Suikoden Tactics.

Replay Value: 8/10

When you complete the game, you have the opportunity to play a "Clear" game, which means that you retain Equipment (If they are not equipped on some one), Runes (If they are not equipped on some one), Potch and
Items. You get a new character and the ability to skip cutscenes. That, and the general fun of the game is enough to warrent a fairly high replay value, especially if you're a Suikoden fan already. What's more is that it makes me want to play Suikoden 4 again. Can't say any other game has ever done that, except Final Fantasy X-2.

Final Fantasy Tactics was without a doubt one of the greatest Playstation games out there.Starting off as a cult classic it became a big success when it was released later as a Greatest Hits package.Ten years later and Final Fantasy Tactics is still one of the best Final Fantasy games ever made.

Of all the Final Fantasy games, Tactics has arguably the best story out there.It's full of emotion, political intrigue, fantastic characters and it's very deep.If this is your first trump through Final Fantasy Tactics, prepare to be dazzled.It's still one of the most absorbing in the series.To the point where you'll be sad to leave when the whole thing is over.The game is also backed up by a fantastic new translation that out does the original and makes the world of Ivalice come alive.The translation alone may actually warrant Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions worth a buy even for those who played through the original game.

It's the gameplay that makes Final Fantasy Tactics a treat, though.Thanks to the job system, customization is nearly endless.Before each battle you can assign jobs to your characters.Each job has specific traits about them and can greatly affect how you perform in battle.Mages have devastating magic abilities while Knights are strong physical attackers.They also bring their own unique abilities to the table.Because there are so many job classes to choose from, there's a lot of experimentation you can do.As you master abilities you'll also be able to mix and match.You could have a Squire casting white magic, for example provided you've learned some of the white magic abilities.

As battles progress you gain experience.You pretty much gain experience after each and every turn, which is nice.Not only do you gain experience but you also gain job points to help you master the abilities in your job class.It's pretty simple stuff and you'll be surprised at just how fast you can learn abilities here.

Final Fantasy Tactics provides its own challenges, though.Not all your enemies are taken down easily, and if you don't take advantage of the opportunities to improve your characters abilities you'll be overwhelmed before you know it.When they say Final Fantasy Tactics, they're not kidding.Sometimes little simple mishaps in your strategy can cost you a battle.Not only that, but even doing things such as casting spells you must be careful with because if any of your characters are in range, they'll be struck by that spell.You also have to be quick about reviving characters otherwise you lose them forever.If your first plunge into Final Fantasy Tactics was with the GBA version released in 2003 you'll be in for a rude awakening.

There is also a multiplayer thrown in there.You can work with a friend or battle friends.First there are melee battles where you can battle up against friends and then there's the Rendezvous Battles where you'll team up with a friend.These let you get some rare and hard to find items that are otherwise unable to be obtained.

While Final Fantasy Tactics is a great game, it certainly doesn't do as much in the technical department as it does in the gameplay.The game itself doesn't really look any different from the game released ten years ago.There's little, if any, enhancement to the graphics at all.For the pleasure of story, however, there are some pretty cool cutscenes thrown in that are incredible looking.These cutscenes are truly artistic and in depth.While those cutscenes are beautiful, it's a shame Square-Enix did little to update the games other visuals.Despite the cool cutscenes, though, there are some slow down issues in battle.

Music wise, though, Final Fantasy Tactics easily has some of the best music in the series.It's still memorable to hear and can still give many video game soundtracks a run for their money.While the voice acting isn't as good as other video games, they add a lot of depth to the cutscenes.

Surprisingly, there are quite a few differences outside of the translation to Final Fantasy Tactics The War of the Lions.New characters such as Balthier appear.There are new missions exclusive to the PSP version as well as the multiplayer aspect of the game.While there aren't a huge assortment of new items and abilities, you'll find War of the Lions takes a much longer time to master than the original.

Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is a great re-release of a great classic.While it's still a good game a bit more could've been done to update it.The technical issues will probably annoy some fans, but for the most part you're getting a good game.Even if you have the original, this one is worth a look.

Drive to Survive Review

I have been looking for this game for quite a while now, i've heard that it was awesome for four players, but it was nowhere to be seen, the problem was that this game was named everywhere as MASHED or MASHED XXL or MASHED Fully Loaded, and in Europe the game came with a controller and a multitap. Finally i found that the famous Mashed was called here Drive to Survive, i got this game and was everthing that i expected, a simple car game but with a huge amount of fun factor. I was looking for a game to play four players without the pain of the split screen, you know what means to play a car game with a screen splitted in four, it's sometimes terrible. But this game allows you to play four players at once without the split screen. The thing is that it is not a racing game, it's a fun game oriented to multiplayer. Like battles with cars and all that, you have weapons, you can crush your opponents smashing your car against theirs, throw them off cliffs, it's like mario kart but with a serious attitude and more mature, the point in this game is to disable all the cars of the other opponents in the track with you.

Why i used 3 of 5 with this game, 'cause it's very simple and if you're looking for a game to play on your own i advice you to move on to something else, but if you're looking for a car game to enjoy with friend, then this is it. It's incredibly fun.

The game uses a very interesting system of four player, if you don't have a multitap you can share one controller between 2 players, each uses the half of the controller (one stick for each player), but i recommend the multitap with four controllers, one controller for each player, i think that's why in europe the game came with an extra controller and a multitap.

The price of this game is hilarious and the free shipping makes it a must. If you're like me that have been looking for Mashed all your life, well, here it is, it's called Drive to survive, but if on the contrary you've never heard of this game but you have a multitap, well, what are you waiting for?.

Shadow of Destiny Review

Shadows of Destiny, hands down, has the most engaging story of any game I have ever played. Probably a third of the game is CG movies--which are great at moving a story. The voice acting, if not perfect, is well above average for a video game. The graphics, as other reviews attest, are simply top-notch, making this game a visual feast. Indeed, it is interactive cinema, if I have ever seen it.
The premise is that you are being murdered, over and over again, and that you need to flit through time (from the 16th century to the present) to tweak events to prevent the possibility of your murder. This involves puzzle solving, such as the use of ropes, ladders, discussing possible movie topics (no joke!), borrowing keys, eavesdropping, and, of course, making weird use of the legendary Philosopher's Stone (if only Harry Potter was along for the ride). Sounds great, right? Well, aside from its not really engaging deeply with the implications and paradoxes of time travel, the story is. The puzzles are not too easy, but you won't need a clue book, either--this isn't Myst.
For all you technical types out there, there is occasional pop-up and slowdown, but it didn't bother me.
The real problem is game play. There is no action in this game. No jumping, no punching, no epic boss battles, no strategy, no practicing your Crouching Tiger day after day. You can walk, talk, and manipulate objects in the most basic way. Anything more (including most object manipulation) is handled by the cut scenes. So the game basically alternates between walking and talking on the one hand, and cut scenes on the other. The story emerges beautifully (I have finished the game) chapter by chapter.
So what do you do when it is over? Well, unless you like to watch the same movie over and over again, you go out and buy another movie. There is no skill to develop, no "I should have done it that way" from hindsight. There is no reason to play this again. Yes, the box promises some new bits and pieces, but this is no Vagrant Story, where the second time is more fun than the first.
So, will you plunk down $xx for an awesome ten-hour interactive movie that you will only play once? I did, and I don't regret it. Story to me is paramount, and I have a bunch of other games and don't give each of my games 50 hours anyway.
But if you have limited resources and a small library of beloved games that you play over and over? Rent it on a rainy weekend and play through the whole thing.

Time Crisis 3 Review

Okay, let me just start off by saying that this game ROCKS! If you are a fan of any Time Crisis game (And many people are), then I would get this game sooner than later.
Gameplay: 5/5-
The gameplay is fast, fun, and even better than the arcade version in that you can play a console-exclusave Rescue Mission mode (In which you carry out special missions in the Time Crisis storyline using new character Alice and a sniper rifle) and Crisis Mission mode (Which is kind of like Rescue Mission mode in that it's console exclusive and it offers new missions). WARNING: THIS GAME CAN'T REALLY BE ENJOYED WITHOUT A GUNCON. IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE ONE, THE PACKAGE OF TIME CRISIS 3 W/ GUNCON2 WORKS WELL
Graphics: 4/5-
The graphics in this game are top-notch. The only reason why it doesn't get a 5/5 in my eyes is that sometimes people fall through walls when shot. That's it. Other than that flaw, the physics are nice as people react properly when shot. If shot in the leg, the fall foward, and fall back if shot in the head. You get the idea.
Multiplayer: 2/5-
This is what killed the game. Unless you happen to have two PS2s and two TVs in the same room, don't expect to get much out of multiplayer. In splitscreen, it's hard to hit the enemies with a GUNCON and instead of dividing the screen in half, it creates two small boxes to play in that leaves half the screen space unused. Linked games are much more fun because you both get your own screen to look at and shoot.
Replay Value: 3/5-
You'll play this game untill you beat arcade mode, get high scores on all of the stages, and get medals on all of the missions. Then you might play arcade mode a little more. All this will only take up about two weekends if you're good, maybe three or four if you're avrage. Or, if you're a big fan (Like me) you'll play this game endlessly.
Well, that's it. In addition to this, I recommend Time Crisis 2. If you don't own a GUNCON2 (You need #2 to play this game), then I suggest getting one from the Time Crisis 3 + GUNCON2 package. Well there you have it. My review of Time Crisis 3.

Onimusha: Blade Warriors Review

I'm a fan of samurai games as well as fighting games. Onimusha Blade Warrior is sort of like Super Smash Brothers with sharp swords.
While some might think of this as a bad thing, I thought it was a brilliant idea. Instead of bouncing around with Yoshi and Link and other cartoon characters, I get to have the fast paced multiplayer fun of the Super Smash Brothers gameplay, but with more rich, robust characters. You get to build up experience and weapons as you go, choosing from a wide range of characters. You can be a young woman, a zombie, a fat old man, or many other characters in between.
There are five levels of difficulty, so even if you get through the entire game on easy you still have quite a lot of challenge ahead of you. There is a full tutorial to get you going, and then quick play as well as campaign play. You can even bring your fully developed campaign charcters into multiplay and see how they stack up against your friends!
There are nice cut scenes that move the story along, and good graphics in general. I do have to say that I had several issues with the control of the characters. Up lets you jump up to higher levels, but down just lets you squat in place. Other keys seemed very un-intuitive at first. But like all games, the more you play it, the more you get used to what the game requires of you.
You can unlock new backgrounds, characters and weapons as you go, and there's a fun variety to work with. This isn't a complex, strategic game like Halo or Splinter Cell, but it definitely is a fun way to blow through a couple of hours of free time with friends.

Grandia Extreme Review

Grandia 2 for the Sega Dreamcast was one of the best RPG games in recent years. So, it was without question that this title would be on my 'must-buy' list when I read about its release. I figured it would be at least as good as G2, and hopefully better, with the PS2's DVD storage capacity. Well, after playing for nearly 120 hours (longer than I have spent on any other game), I'm still not sure whether to reccommend this game.
Part of me is dissappointed, very dissappointed in the RPG aspects of this game. There is little, if any, storyline, and the characters are just typical anime kid stuff. The storyline in G2 was amazing. The scope of that game rivals any Final Fantasy game, yet the game itself was too easy. In Xtreme, the game is much harder, but the story is soo bad, they could have left it out entirely, and had a more interesting game.
So, what makes one put in 120 hours (and counting) into a game that is so uninteresting? The gameplay. The game's battle system is the best I've ever played. I've never been a fan of dungeon-exploring, 1st person style adventure games, but this game is different. The action moves along so smoothly, and the games system of levelling up is ingenious. You can complete each stage as often as you want, each time with tougher enemies, and build your characters stats to unbelievable levels. And yes, the bosses can be fought more than once as well. And when you think you've actually beaten the game, think again. All the dungeons gain a HUGE increase in difficulty and a new 100-level dungeon appears.
Overall, if you are looking for a fun game, that you will enjoy playing for weeks, I can't reccommend Grandia Xtreme enough. Just try to ignore the bad voice acting, and weak storyline, ok?

Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires Review

_Okay.So I bought this game mainly on the basis of my friend's recommendation.I was extremely happy with it, and surprised by the sheer fun of this game.Kill hundreds of enemy soldiers using many many unique weapons and styles of combat, and conquor China.I won't go into every specific detail about gameplay, but I will say this was a very well made game.I'll break it down in an attempt to overview important buying info.

-Graphics: Good.Not great, but good.Game experiances phantom slowdowns every once in a while though.Not -often- but so far three times in the time I've played it.I've beaten the game once, and I'm halfway through it again.

-Music: To be honest I've never noticed the in-game music.Too busy slaughtering unworthy minions.I really like the menu backround music though.Catchy.

-Gameplay: It's been said in other reviews that you will encounter enemy officers so absurdly cheap that they will juggle you from full health to nothing without you ever hitting the ground.I bought this game assuming it was an exaggeration by frustrated gamers.LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE :(Okay, with that out of the way, comes the other incredibly annoying point in gameplay.Archers/sourcers.Ranged attacks that will range from knocking you back (stopping your momentum), to knocking you straight on your butt.Absurdly cheap and annoying and they appear in large groups.Good news is that they don't deal any appreciable amount of damage and can be disposed of quickly enough.Bad news is that they tend to appear alongside cheap officers.
__Okay, those points made, comes the good news.Officers are (keywords here) *not commonly* that cheap.The game makes it however so you have to be just as cheap in defeating them to stand any chance.But it's possible.Take note that charged attack combos are your friends.And for fair warning, I just went around, killed 820 minions in a battle (took 25 minutes), then got double-teamed by two such cheap officers.
___My last issue with gameplay is arrows.You get a bow and can use it at will.Aiming and firing is quite simple, and it does a decent amount of damage.The main use for it is hitting distant archers or dismounting people riding on war elephants.(you get to ride elephants and horses in this game, yes).What's my beef?You get a very limited number of arrows to begin with, and finding them in battle is rare.I don't see any point in making a rarely used weapon even more worthless.It'd be *balanced* if you had unlimited, since I can take out literally 40 enemies for the time it takes to kill one via bow and arrow.So they really limited something already limited.

-Controls: Almost everything you'd want or need.Except the gaurd button.You are given a button that gaurds you against pretty much all attacks from the front.One would assume this would mean from just the very front, but apparently not.Enemy officers can block attacks even from the sides.You however, can only block attacks from the few pixels in the center of the screen.In other words, does not work 99% of the time.This would be a most negligible point since I've only ever needed to block against officers.Namely, the cheap ones.However, they can block with almost invernerability, while you can't ever block their attacks.Makes those cheap guys even more frustrating.
__Last point on controls however, you do get a taunt!Very funny, especially when you kill two or three people by taunting.In this catagory I'll list that the camera is of course in third person, and it works well.Gaurd button also functions to reorient the camera behind you, which you will need to do from time to time.

-Replay: A game's true value will always boil down to it's replayvalue.I think the replay value is high.You can always start a new conquoring campaign.And campaigns will always be different every time.The other empires struggling for control will do different things each time, form different alliances, invade different areas and all that.Plus...the campaign mode comes with a "fictional" mode, where you start a campaign with RANDOMLY placed enemies.That just makes it all so much more interesting.

-Edit character mode: The product hilight makes much mention of the character edit mode.It's slightly overrated however.The game gives you access to MANY, MANY unique weapons, which is a big plus.And any custom character can use any weapon.But when it comes down to making your stats, you get only 7 different pre-made sets to work with.Something I found out is that character's run speed, not listed in the stat sets, is also effected by what you choose.Anyway, when it comes to your character's model, the options you get for dressing them up is vastly limited.Definitely better than nothing, don't get me wrong.But for a system that supposedly has been upgraded from a previous game, couldn't they give me more than 3 different heads for my chosen body type?
__In basic, it's nice, but don't expect as much as you'd get from the latest Wrestlemania game.

-Multiplayer: Weak at best.Don't get this game expecting it to be a fantastic multiplayer game.You get four different verses battles, none of which is particularly exiting.Co-op story mode would have been very easily programmed in, and this game would have been fantastic with it.Oh well.

-Other notes: This is definitely a slaher game, but it has its strategy elements to it.Pick who you bring into battle, what political moves you make, manage your gold.How you use your leadership may make your life incredibly difficult or easy, depending on what you do and what sort of luck you have that game.Remember things are different each time, so choose your decisions wisely.

_I gave this a fun rating of 5, because I think it is, but overall is 4 due to cheap officer fights.A little bit of cheapness here and there wouldn't be aggrevating, but spending 25 minutes decimating close to a kilo of troops to be gang-raped by two cheap officers?That's just not cool.As I said before, luckily it doesn't happen often, but if you play through the campaign mode it will happen to you, no doubt.
_I would rate this title a definite buy.How it stands against other Dynasty games I do not know, as this is my first.If that is the information you seek, I'd advise reading articles posted by others who have played them.Standing alone, this is a very fun game however.

It deserves to be on the cheapest and worst system.Like, it's alot more fun to use the money to drive go carts rather spending on this junk.It's all too flat.Racing games are only good with obstacals like ramps, water splash, and stuff to run over.If you really want to try it, rent it or play at someones house who has this lame game

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest Review

This is my first game on the psp and i am not sorry i bought it!
There are so many reasons this makes a great game:

Gameplay: It is a little bit short and a little bit easy, but in my opinion it is very fun to fight all those pirates. I love the way Jack stands and runs,it is very reminicent to the movies.

Controls: Controlls are easy to master. One small difficulty is that sometimes the enemy you are fighting strays out of the camera, but its still easy to tell what you are doing. Not hard at all.

Story: Im not shure how well it follows the movie because its not out yet, but it is not todetailed, which i like, so it does not spoil the movie. It does seem a little short though.

Overall: As i stressed before it is a very enjoyable game. Its not frustrating, just challenging enough. I am a big fan of Captain Jack and cant wait till the movie comes out. Yet again Jack does not dissapoint. Highly reccommended for people just starting out on the psp.

Finally, after years of waiting, the Ys series has come back to the US.Before I jump into the gameplay, let me state that if you like the anime, youll love the game...plain and simple.As far as gameplay goes, the control is flawless.While there is some backtracking, for the most part this game is straight forward, story driven, hack and slash action.While leveling up (mainly the swords) can be a real chore, the hack and slash battles are so much fun that its easy to ignore the time it takes to level up.The games music is excellent and I can honestly say that this is the first game in quite some time that Id like to own the soundtrack for.Each song is well orchestrated and fits smoothly into its portion of the game.The story, while not the best story ever told, is interesting enough to keep you playing all the way through.The character development is phenomenal, with numerous characters growing more and more important to the story as the game progresses.As far as graphics go, they fit this game perfectly.Sure they are not the jaw dropping graphics of some of the other Action games and Rpgs of the big name consoles (ex. Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy X, DMC3, Tales of Symphonia), but they grow on you rather quickly.Overall, this game is defintely a must own.However, due to this series not having a huge following here in the states, it is sure to get EXTREMELY RARE.My EB only had 3 copies and thats all they plan on getting!Buy it now before its too late!

OKAGE: Shadow King Review

This game may not be for everyone, but is worth renting to find out if it is for you. Okage adds a new humorous twist to the rpg genre. The characters are very well developed. The battle system adds some unique features, like being able to combine all three characters attack's into one for extra damage. The story line is very strange but will keep you hooked and entertained. I have owned the game for one week and already on the last chapter. Do not think the game is short though (I beat final fantasy 8 in about the same amount of time). I hope you will give this game a try. This is the only rpg for the PS2 that I've been satisfied about buying, and I own almost all rpg's for the PS2. I own 42 PS2 games altogether and am most satisfied with this one...

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance Collection I & II Review

I have played many games in past, but loved Balder's gate the most. Both parts are connected with a good story line. First part has 3 characters to play. Second one has 5 to start with. Once you complete mission using any of the characters, it unlocks 'Extreme' mode and also another character 'Drizzit'. Although this fellow doesnt like upgrading his weapon or armour, one can add powers to him through experience points. Best thing about this is you can bring in any character from previously saved game and complete game in 'extreme' mode. This now unlocks another character with super weapons. Love it!!
Although main theme remains same for all characters, there is a twist. Each character holds his own unique mission that is passed on to it from someone in tavern. This adds fun by switching characters and then playing their mission. I have completed this game 3 times using different characters in 2004.. 5 years back.
Only drawback in dark alliance - II is that last villian (forgot the name) is not as powerful as I imagine. I could kill it easily.
Once you complete your game, there is another story that suggests there will be Dark Alliance-3 in near future. I have been waiting for 5 years now... but none came out. I would be among first to purchase it!!

Gundam: Federation vs Zeon Review

This game is probably the best Gundam game for the PS2 so far. I already own the Japanese version for PS2 named Mobile Suit Gundam Federation VS Zeon DX and I own the Japanese Dreamcast version named Mobile Suit Gundam Federation VS Zeon and DX. The is an arcade shooting type of game. The game also includes mobile suits from Mobile Suit Gundam and some from 08th MS Team like RX-78-2 Gundam, MS-06S Char's Zaku II,RX-79[G] Ground Combat Gundam, and other mobile suits. The game also includes secret characters which I won't tell you because you will just have to get the game to find out. According to the Japanese PS2 vesion there are four diffrent modes of play: arcade mode, VS mode, Mission mode, and at least in the Japanese version a network mode. It is about time Bandai that Bandai released one of it's top-selling Gundam video games in the US.

First off,this is a much better purchase than the remixed collection to me,which i also own...you can save any game on this collection,not so on the remix game....i also dont understand the other reviewer saying you cant adjust the difficulty setting,you can on every single game,although on the ghosts and goblins games you wont notice any difference other than the extra lives.....of course the load times are long,but thats nothing new on the psp...i will say if you are buying this game for the ghosts and goblins series you will get alot more enjoyment out of the "ultimate" ghosts and goblins game (a game you should snatch up if you can find a copy, and like platformers) which lets you respawn exactly where you die instead of having to restart at the beginning of every level...and the graphics are a nice touch....other good games on this title are eco fighters,and mercs and 3 versions of street fighter....i really like this game.....but the ghosts and goblins games are so tough they are almost too frustrating to be fun at times..........still,4 out of 5 stars...
